I suspect we are related via age and generation (baby boomers). As children of the "finest generation" we were taught what really matters and live by a code of giving our best. No one who follows the crowd is doing their best because they please others. At the moment we take our last breaths, we aren't going to have regrets that we should have respected our parents more, forgiven those who trespassed against us or spent more time with those we loved the most.
