As a rule of thumb, species with, “monster,” as part of their name probably don’t make very good pets. Other key words to avoid would include, “venomous/poisonous,” “killer,” “fanged,” “”stinging,” and, “demon/devil.”

They are called Gila Monster, not Gila Cuddly Fuzzball.
Where was the miscommunication?

It seems that Colorado Man is joining Flrida Man and Bay Area Man as doomed branches off the homo sapiens branch of hominids.

Those dealers are probably just trying to steer buyers over to something with a higher mark-up price...Bearded Dragons, Asian Water Monitors... You have to watch these slick lizard salesmen.

In general, animals that can, and want, to kill you do not make for good pets.

Reptiles don’t make good pets. Even turtles can spread disease. Keeping anything that is poisonous or deadly large constrictors is stupid, and should be unlawful except for zoos or research institutions.

No reptiles, amphibians, and lizards make good pets because they won't respond to the petting in the same way a warm-blooded mammal will. Lizards have lizard brains, not mammal brains. Mammal brains like the contact. Lizard brains don't or are indifferent.

I consider anyone with a non-traditional pet to have a screw loose and to be avoided.

We were up in the hills around Rye and came across an old cabin. It was down to the foundation. We were looking through it and I damned near stepped on one of these. They don’t warn you like a rattler. Scary five seconds. For those who don’t know, it’s pronounced “he-la” monster.

This guy was probably “disneytized”. He thought animals could think and reason like humans. If he was nice to the gila, it would of course be nice back to him.

If I remember correctly, Gila Monsters are a protected species. Isn’t it against the law to own them?

Personally, I think that a Cape Buffalo would make a great, cuddly pet.

I say we remove the warning labels from the Gila monsters and let nature take it’s course.

Gila Monster is the world only known poisonous lizard.
However the poison level is low.
So Gila monster has to bite and hold, while emitting poisonous saliva. The human victims (mostly drunk) usually lose a limb, but the death is very rare.
I am aware of only one death so far so this would be the second one.
While petting Gila monster is not recommended, you just have to be a real idiot to get killed by Gila monster.
