NEW YORK (AP) — A criminal case involving handwritten lyrics to the classic rock megahit “Hotel California” and other Eagles favorites went to trial Wednesday in New York, with three men accused of scheming to thwart band co-founder Don Henley’s efforts to reclaim the allegedly ill-gotten documents.
The trial concerns about 100 pages of drafts of the words to songs from the 1976 release “Hotel California," which is the third-biggest selling album ever in the U.S.
Rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi, and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski face charges including conspiracy to possess stolen property.
“The defendants were not businessmen acting in good faith, but criminal actors,” Manhattan District Attorney Nicholas Penfold said in his opening. He said they “deceived and manipulated to try to frustrate” Henley's efforts to recover manuscripts that were rightfully his.
The men, all well established in the collectibles world, have pleaded not guilty. Their lawyers have said the case “alleges criminality where none exists and unfairly tarnishes the reputations of well-respected professionals.”
The documents include lyrics-in-development for the songs “Life in the Fast Lane,” “New Kid in Town” and, of course, “Hotel California,” the more than six-minute-long, somewhat mysterious musical tale of the goings-on at an inviting, decadent but ultimately dark place where “you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”
If scorned by some as an overexposed artifact of the '70s, the Grammy-winning song is still a touchstone on classic rock radio and many personal playlists. The entertainment data company Luminate counted more than 220 million streams and 136,000 radio plays of “Hotel California” in the U.S. last year.

The song is 6 minutes long.
DJ’s would put it on and go smoke a cigarette..................or whatever.............
**I hate Fleetwood Mac.**
Back when I listened to r&r I couldn’t stand them, especially Stevie Nicked-in-the-head. She always sounded like she was singing while using one of those belt vibrator machines people used to try and slim their waists.
Same thing with Bohemian Rhapsody...................
In the late 60’s they did it with Hey Jude...............
I’m not sure if it is Henley in particular, or the Eagles in general. Likely the latter. My source is Rick Beato on YT, if you are familiar.
No. Never heard of Beato. Will check it out. Thanks.
They are just prisoners ,of their own device
I liked the early Eagles when they had Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner and those guys.
I’ve read some bad things about Don Henley. Not sure how true they are, but where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.
When Joe Walsh joined the Eagles, I didn’t care for their sound. I don’t mind a lot of Walsh’s stuff when he was solo, but I didn’t like his effect on the Eagles.

Yep, hated that one, and ‘hey jude’ as well.
Also, I was probably at times subconsciously dismissive of band names that were silly. But then I have thought some had cool names, and yet were just too painful on the ears (ACDC for one).
I was beginning to phase out of my addiction to listening to music by 1981, so anything after that I have little knowledge of.
Yeah...ya know...Hell.
Henley is an @$$hole. I hope he loses
It’s not him on trial.
This is a CRIMINAL TRIAL.
These guys face serious prison time..............
The Eagles are way over played on radio and I rate them way down there with Fleetwood Mac. Personally, I think Hotel California is about as boring a song as was ever penned.
I know, but in Henley’s case I don’t give a crap. If they get off, that shythead loses.
I liked the Eagles first 3 albums. Especially Desperado. I can play much of Desperado on acoustic. And FM before the unintelligible warbling Nicks came on the scene. I still put on Kiln House occasionally.
I’d rather poke my ears out with a soldering iron than hear Rumors or One Of These Nights again.
😜🤦♂️............................
Add Layla and Stairway to Heaven to that list
“Henley is getting a taste of what he did to Felder”
Is that the situation where one of the group (Felder maybe?) objected to Henley forcing the group to perform for a RAT candidate?
