THE WAR IN MISSISSIPPI: Further Concerning Gen. Sherman’s March Through Jackson; PRECIPITATE RETREAT OF THE REBELS (2/21/1864)

CAIRO, Saturday, Feb. 20.

An officer from the Big Black River reports that just before reaching Jackson, Mississippi, a skirmish ensued between a part of Gen. SHERMAN'S forces, and a body of 4,000 to 5,000 rebels, in which the latter were defeated, and forty captured.

Our army passed through Jackson in two columns, the enemy retreating across Pearl River so precipitately that his pontoons, two pieces of artillery, and a number of prisoners fell into our hands.

Our forces seized provisions of all kinds and swept on.

Great dissatisfaction is said to exist among the Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri regiments, and large numbers of deserters are coming into our lines.

Gen. SHERMAN reached Meridian ten days after leaving Vicksburgh.

A portion of Gen. TUTTLE's division got behind, was cut off from the expedition, and returned to Vicksburgh.

Gen. MCARTHUR is in command of the District of Vicksburgh, Gen. MCPHERSON having accompanied Gen. SHERMAN with most of his corps.

Passengers from Mobile report that the inhabitants of that city feel sure of an attack upon that city by the Federal forces.

Fifteen thousand rebel troops are reported to be in and about the city.

The Union sentiment prevailed to a considerable extent, and would be expressed as soon as protection was afforded to the citizens.

Nothing was known of the reported revolt at Fort Morgan.

The reports that Gen. SMITH's command of cavalry and mounted infantry, in their expedition into Mississippi, had a fight with FORREST's men are not confirmed.

Gen. BUCKLAND, in command at Memphis, is gaining much favor there by his judicious administration of affairs.

Ice is running heavily in the Mississippi at Cairo, and fifty miles below.

Jackson
Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash

[Verse 1: Both, Johnny Cash]
We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout
We’ve been talkin’ ‘bout Jackson ever since the fire went out
I’m going to Jackson, I’m gonna mess around
Yeah, I’m goin’ to Jackson
Look out, Jackson town

[Verse 2: June Carter, Johnny Cash]
Well, go on down to Jackson, go ahead and wreck your health
Go play your hand, you big-talkin’ man, and make a big fool of yourself
Yeah, go to Jackson, go comb your hair
Honey, I’m gonna snowball Jackson
See if I care

[Verse 3: Johnny Cash & June Carter]
When I breeze into that city, people gonna stoop and bow (Hah)
All them women gonna make me, teach ‘em what they don’t know how
I’m goin’ to Jackson, you turn-a loose-a my coat
‘Cause I’m goin’ to Jackson
“Goodbye,” that’s all she wrote

[Verse 4: June Carter]
But they’ll laugh at you in Jackson, and I’ll be dancin’ on a Pony Keg
They’ll lead you ‘round town like a scolded hound
With your tail tucked between your legs
Yeah, go to Jackson, you big-talkin’ man
And I’ll be waitin’ in Jackson, behind my Japan Fan

[Verse 5: Both]
Well now, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout
We’ve been talkin’ ‘bout Jackson ever since the fire went out
I’m goin’ to Jackson, and that’s a fact
Yeah, we’re goin’ to Jackson
Ain’t never comin’ back

[Outro: Johnny Cash & Both]
Well, we got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout
Honey, we’ve been talkin’ ‘bout Jackson, ever since the fire went

The fires are still smoldering as Sherman leaves town.
