Weekly Garden Thread - February 17-23, 2023 [Best Flowers to Plant with Vegetables Edition]
February 17, 2024 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 02/17/2024 5:36:12 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Weekend Cabin Fever. It’s killing me. I used to get some weekdays off but am Mon-Fri now and the last two weeks have been nice on weekdays and nasty on weekends. 50s - 60s all week and 21 right now with a high of 33 today. It will be in the high 60s again by mid-week.

That’s good, because it’s full on winter at my house. This time we got about 7-8” of snow. It’s very pretty. It’s not good for building snowmen, so maybe we will go sledding later.

The landscaping shrubs are fine. Some states have them on the invasive species listings now - but that’s the WINGED Euonymous/Burning Bush variety, not the one Daniel posted.

https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=Is+Euonymus+a+native+plant+or+invasive%3F&atb=v393-1&ia=web

My neighbor has a lovely line of the Winged E/Burning Bushes and I haven’t seen them spread or move at all in the 8 years I’ve lived here. I drive past them all the time on my way out to the main road. I never see them ‘in the wild’ around here and they are hard to miss in the fall when they are fire-engine RED.

They must spread more in warmer zones.

Rutgers is a reliable, productive and delicious tomato. Originally bred for the Campbell Soup Company. :)

For early tomatoes, try ‘Fourth of July’ or ‘Early Girl.’

I’ve grown both. They’re not as big as Rutgers, but they’re definitely EARLY. :)

“Well can you speed it up a little? I’m tired of the cold.”

We’re back to cold weather for the weekend, but sunny. Super windy, today - but that’s blowing in some warmer weather, so I’ll just listen to the wind chimes do their thing and stay in my sweats for today. ;)

I LOVE ‘The Spruce.’ They always have interesting content.

I get ‘lost’ if I go to any of their ‘Home Decor’ pages, LOL!

Ok. That explains why I associate Euonymus with invasive.

That’s really Rosalind Creasy’s garden at her CA home. She’s made a great living off of working from home, growing stuff and photographing it and writing books.

She’s one of my go-to ‘Garden Gals.’ I always recommend her books.

LOL! I’m still going to grow Kale! I love it!

I spent four hours in the ER yesterday, passing a Kidney Stone. My BFF SWEARS it’s because I eat too much Kale but they just run in my family. You are either prone to them, or you’re not. (I asked the doctor; he said Kale is fine and is not a problem.)

This was my first go-round with them. The pain was worse than a root canal or childbirth or slamming your hand in the car door! I never believed it - but I sure do NOW! :)

And at the end of the day all your precious garden tools are in one place.

I have decided to try my hand at gardening this spring... I do live on a farm so why not give it a try... My late sister had the place ready for raising garden year round but poor health prevented her from doing much.

My food-grade 5 gal white buckets have been delivered and I have potatoes on the window sills starting to sprout out. I will put the buckets on the back patio and see how they do there... getting my feet wet growing stuff in the buckets seems the right way to begin.

I have good soil in the barn I think, cows and horses spent many years in there pooping and much loose hay and feed has fallen in that soil... now I just have to use a wheelbarrow to get some of that rich dirt up to the back patio..

I am going to try sweet potatoes, carrots and regular old white potatoes in the buckets... if it works out then I have a large greenhouse and could keep growing year round I suppose.

Given the state of things it certainly seem like a good time to start growing food...
