Mutant wolves roaming Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have developed cancer-resilient abilities: study

Mutant wolves that roam the human-free Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have developed cancer-resilient genomes that could be key to helping humans fight the deadly disease, according to a study.

The wild animals have managed to adapt and survive the high levels of radiation that have plagued the area after a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl power plant exploded in 1986, becoming the world’s worst nuclear accident.

Humans abandoned the area after the explosion leaked cancer-causing radiation into the environment, and a 1,000-square-mile zone was roped off to prevent further human exposure. But in the nearly 38 years since the nuclear disaster, wildlife has reclaimed the area — including packs of wolves that seem to be unaffected by the chronic exposure to the radiation.

Or perhaps The Science (tm) is wrong, and the radiation levels around Chernobyl don’t really cause excess cancer rates?

Maybe it’s because it wasn’t as dangerous as they told us it was.

I wonder if they ever considered that the radiation might not be as
cancer causing’ as they thought?

Well, the downside is that you will also become a mutant. Can't have everything, I guess.

Microdoses of radiation can actually be beneficial. Just google

At least there is hope for after the nuclear war.

“human-free Chernobyl Exclusion Zone”

That might explain why the zone is human-free LOL

“Microdoses of radiation can actually be beneficial”

The effect is known as ‘hormesis’ and the background radiation stimulates the immune system. One of the bugaboos of the environmentalists is the concentration/presence of Radon gas. The higher the concentration the lower the lung cancer rate.

There was a housing project in Taiwan that was built with steel beams that were for some reason infused with radioactive Cobalt. The cancer rate of the residents was much lower than the general population.

Hormesis also occurs when exposed to pathogens and viral agents. Locking down and isolating actually weakens the immune system.

“I wonder if they ever considered that the radiation might not be as cancer causing’ as they thought?”

That’s the wrong takeaway.

Certain doses of radiation are fatal. Sometimes people are exposed and don’t feel a thing, but their death is already inevitable.

However, some things that are harmful in large amounts may be beneficial in small amounts. This is what the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has consistently demonstrated. A lot of plants and animals died in the zone but thrived around the perimeter. And by that I mean they thrived near the perimeter more than further away from the zone.
