You will own nothing and be happy
And they don’t care if you’re happy
While I think the 70 year old women was wronged, I would imagine she could have gotten a home equity line of credit with which to pay the tax bill.
Town wants to seize our railroad ground for a bike path. We sell stone from the property my retirement
Note to self: Pay taxes.
I agree. It’s not that she couldn’t pay a mere $1,607.68 in taxes, She wouldn’t.
For whatever reason, she made a series of stupid mistakes. And lost.
She should have paid her taxes.
I agree. But there is such a thing as proportional punishment. If you were sentenced to 20 years for jaywalking, should I say, “If you didn’t want 20 years in jail, you shouldn’t have jaywalked.”
bkmk
In Texas delinquent property owners can turn to private enterprise who will pay all your delinquent taxes, secure a lien against your home, and allow you to make monthly payments.
You pay a lot less interest than the interest and fees the state charges you.
I suspect this woman, for whatever reason, refused to pay the measly thousand bucks she owed the state and then owed that tax lien firm who bought the debt.
Sounds like she brought his all on herself.
70 year old ...may have no family ...
property tax should stop at some age , taxing people off the land is wrong.
Put a lien on that's satisfied when her estate is settled.
Your comment sounds a lot like blaming a victim for being in a place where a criminal could attack her.
I tend to focus on the criminal doing something bad, and to a lesser extent a victim foolishly going where she shouldn't.
We should not tolerate criminal like behavior in our society, and especially not tolerate it from our governments.
Note to self. Remind others that the fifth amendment of the US constitution says private property cannot be taken by the government without just compensation.
Very confusing. We only see the actual figures from the SC Tyler case. How many years ago did the lady leave the $1600 in taxes unpaid? Was she warned that the municipality was selling the lien and the buyer might exact some serious finance charges?
But I agree that she should keep any sale proceeds over the amount owed and the fees. What did the house sell for?
Everyone knows to pay their taxes.
And nearly everyone J Walks.
What an outrage.
I object to interactions between the state and private companies in which private companies are taking on the duties that were previously only performed by the state.
This feels too much like fascism to suit me.
The state can claim a private home when it's tax bill equals it's appraised value. That is reasonable and equitable.
But of course that's not how any of these criminal minded bastards think. They want to be literal "Lords" of the peasants.
Arizona, it seems, has the same law. There's no excuse for this woman ending up in trouble as she did.
Victims generally chose to fight back their attacker. I see nothing here that indicates the homeowner did anything.
Especially pay the thousand bucks.
