The pre-Valentine’s Day holiday is February 13.
Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive will hit theaters for one day on February 13, known around the world as Galentine’s Day.
The film tells the story of the disco legend who has been inspiring millions for five decades with her song “I Will Survive,” but only fully understood the lyrics when she hit rock bottom at age 65. The film is about the power of faith and a woman’s magnificent second act. Check out the trailer below.
Back in June, Gaynor attended a celebratory screening at the Tribeca Film for the new documentary. The event culminated in a live performance that included that chart-topping 1979 anthem.
The film, directed by Betsy Schechter, gives an overview of the 79-year-old New Jersey native’s eventful career as well as her work on the album Testimony, which won her second career Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album in 2020.
The documentary was described by Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos upon release as “a beautiful movie by Betsy Schechter, which is a moving homage to the disco queen. It underscores how the power of faith and prayer has helped in her life (especially in overcoming all of those trials and tribulations) and it molded her into the music icon that she is today.”
Culture Mix’s Carla Hay wrote of the film: “Gaynor is open about very painful aspects of her life. She also shows an endearing self-awareness about her fame and legacy in the music business. Her combination of strength and vulnerability are what make this documentary worth watching.”
Billboard’s Cam Zhang observes: “Gaynor contends with enduring past freak accidents, ageism, abuse and pivoting music genres. The film and Gaynor share themes of owning who you are and love, maintaining perseverance and inclusivity, and breaking down barriers for other Black and female artists.”
Yawn.
on February 13, known around the world as Galentine’s Day?
First I ever heered of it...............
“Surive”? Someone needs an editor - or a spellchecker.
My wife and I pretty much ignore the big February 14 commercial holiday, why would we even consider something the day before too?
That was their mistake.
I’ll watch if and when it becomes available for home viewing. Documentary about redemption and turning your life around. Plus it was a great song.
I know - I checked the source as well.
Cue the Pixar version.
Disco clearly sux, but this song brings up a migraine.
The real story here is that a documentary that usually would go straight to streaming is hitting the theaters. We are starting to see the dearth of content resulting from the strike.
Spam. This is the first time I have ever heard of galentines day.
Any song that uses the referee whistle as a tonal instrument should be exiled.
Bad Boys is a case in point.
Paradise City gets a pass-it’s used as a call to action.
It’s new to me. I’ll admit to having some reservations concerning what it’s really about.

Many people have a kind of love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day: the holiday is disparaged as a manufactured holiday foisted upon us by greeting card companies, and there’s often a sense that it’s only for people who are romantically paired, making it feel rooted in exclusion.
All of which sets the stage perfectly for Galentine’s Day.
That’s right: Galentine’s Day—a day for women to celebrate their friendships with their lady friends. It’s Valentine’s Day with your gals.

It’s right there in the name.
The word—a blend of Valentine’s Day and gal—was introduced to the world by the chipper and dedicated Leslie Knope, the fictional Deputy Director of the Parks and Recreation Department of the also-fictional city of Pawnee, Indiana, in the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, which ran from 2009 to 2015.
What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.
— “Galentine’s Day,” Parks and Recreation, 2010
After that 2010 debut, the word was mentioned in episodes that aired in 2012 and 2014, and by 2016 evidence of the word’s appeal was starting to show up in national and international publications, as people everywhere embraced the very idea of a holiday for celebrating friendships. Its lexical success is also clearly signified by the marketing campaigns it’s inspired, as Megan Garber detailed in The Atlantic in 2017. We’re also seeing evidence of galentine being used on its own to refer to one’s best “gals”—beloved female friends.
The word follows in the footsteps of Friendsgiving, which was added to Merriam-Webster.com in January 2020, and is defined as “a celebration or meal shared among friends on or near Thanksgiving Day.”
Same here.
No one was asking for this movie.
No, we've got you to point out the mundane and irrelevant crap that would normally be ignored around here.
How could we survive without you?
I honestly have no idea how you would “surive” without me. Count your lucky stars.
