Have four retail credit cards serviced by Synchrony Bank.
One of the cards (Crate and Barrel) was locked by them yesterday, with a credit balance of almost $700.
Called to ask why the lock was put in place. They said that a "fraud" lock was put on.
We see no unusual activity on the account and don't use it very often. None of our accounts have a balance owed.
In order to remove it they are demanding biometrics. A five-second video recording showing all angles of the face - that will then be fed through an AI program to generate a digital "thumbprint".
Told them to get lost and just cut a check for the credit balance to my address they've had on file for years, since that is my money - not theirs. I would then close all 4 cards since I don't do business why companies like that.
The ONLY reason why a facial "thumbprint", and accompanying voice print from calling them, would be "helpful" would be to pick me out of a crowd of people. No other reason exists.
They claim that prints can be compared against people known to do fraud - but they wouldn't have prints on those people. They also don't have any previous biometrics on me, so there's nothing to compare to.
Be wary of Synchrony Bank.
We have Crate & Barrel, Relax the Back, Lowes, and JC Penney serviced by them.
It looks like I might have to sue them to get my money back.
Consumers beware...
PS: I've worked professionally in computer security for over three decades.
If/when, you/I/we use an ATM, we have a lot of pics taken and looped into our card’s number and what we did at the ATM.
I have a couple of money center bank credit cards. The closest branch office is 100 miles away. I would tell them to pound sand if I had to make the trip to prove my identity. I’d cancel those cards and increase my local credit union limits and open a regional bank sponsored CC..
I have trouble believing that. Do you think Verizon & Paypal are going to go along with Synchrony on that?
Please let us know if you succeed in recovering your credit balance.
There are people online talking about it when seeking to open a new card. I know it happens at Lowes.
It's what I did - but they won't give me my $700 which doesn't belong to them. As soon as I get it, those four store cards will be immediately closed by me.
I don't use ATM's. It's easier to limit cash spending by having to go to the counter for it.
When you are 500 miles from home on the road, it is okay to lock card suddenly?
New replacement card is one week later.

Not saying it is - just that most people have multiple cards in case of emergency.
If someone is charging up my card then I'd like an immediate lock put on it.
I may be on the internet and the gov may have all my searches or emails, etc...
but I never allowed myself to put a pic up on ANYTHING. For sure ive been on security cameras & that is something else.
Not putting a pic up on my personals ad
hasnt helped either. I figure if the guy is interested enough we go for coffee after that . If interested, sure. If not keep on walkin’

II do believe Synchrony Bank has something to do with Amazon
I didn’t know that the Postal Service was looking for material for a new stamp.
interesting
I am a bookkeeper for a construction company.
For years (as a courtesy to our customers), we provided financing through Synchrony.
About four years ago Synchrony changed the terms to bleed the customers and the vendor - so we dropped them like a hot potato.
You might find it interesting that Synchrony Bank somehow has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, in spite of very negative customer reviews https://www.bbb.org/us/oh/kettering/profile/credit-cards-and-plans/synchrony-0322-5001136/customer-reviews BBB says “Customer Reviews are not used in the calculation of BBB Rating”. So what do they use? https://www.bbb.org/overview-of-bbb-ratings Perhaps a BBB complaint may help you get your $700 back?
Synchrony is closely associated with PayPal.
All fraud charges on your card are not your responsibility. That is why companies cause us inconvenience by locking out cards at drop of a hat.
😎
The last time I was anywhere near the Capitol was in late August of 1998. There won’t be any trace of me on their cell phone records since I didn’t have one at the time.
Last Friday I was having issue at JoAnn’s Fabric store paying with my bank card. 3rd attempt it went thru. I went to Walmart and had to pay cash as the card no longer was accepted.
I got back to my car and checked email and saw that Bank of America had sent a message asking if I had purchased items for $49 at JoAnn’s. I tapped on Yes and they said the card was good / unlocked.
Next I went to the grocery store and at the checkout showed the clerk the email message and warned her that the card might not work.
It did work and then I took out some cash that I had spent earlier just in case.
If your credit cards and bank cards do not work then you end up like the Canadian truckers.
Why they froze my account I do not know. I do not shop there but maybe once a year but still they could see what the item was.
It was Nufoam 1” polyester foam. Not jewelry or a tv set!
It was just a little reminder from our Banker Overlords so that you remember your place.
Regards,
Incredible that any business still has relationships with them. I was fraudulently charged thousands of dollars after calling to simply deactivate my card. The customer service agent was embarrassed and claimed that was an error but the card had never been used at Lowes or anywhere and these scrammy bs/negative transactions is why they keep getting sued for unlawful debt collection.
