“Mysterious” is just a lazy way for the article author to draw people in. Natural processes leave lots of polygonal shapes.

I suspect it is only meters, as the limits of ground penetrating radar carried on-board the rover, likely can't achieve the 35 kilometer depth.

I recently read something about mars having a very thick ice pack under the surface. The poly’s may be the result of that.
For me, I just hate the fact that China is on Mars with us.
