NEWBERN, N.C., Feb. 2, 1864.
We are having stirring times in this place just now. The rebels made an attack upon our outposts yesterday morning, with some 15,000 men. The attack commenced about 3 A.M., and was successful in dislodging our garrisons, driving them is. Our loss is not heavy; perhaps a hundred would cover the number of killed, wounded and missing. Lieut.-Col. FELLOWS, of the Seventeenth Massachusetts, with several other officers, have not been heard from.
Last night the enemy did a very handsome thing in capturing the gunboat Underwriter, with her officers and crew. She was lying near Fort Strong, and almost immediately after the capture the Fort began to shell her. The shells were so accurately thrown as to burst in the vessel, setting her on fire, and in about three hours she blew up.
I have not time now to write the particulars by this mail. This place is in command of Brig.-Gen. PALMER. Everything is preparing for a general attack. The general opinion is that the place cannot be taken, though a desperate effort will be made for it. P.E.B.
BALTIMORE, Friday, Feb. 5.
The following has just been received by steamer from Fortress Monroe:
FORTRESS MONROE, Friday, Feb. 5.
A messenger has just arrived with dispatches to Maj.-Gen. BUTLER, from Newbern, N. C, Feb. 2, at 5:15 P.M.
The post in Newbern is attacked, and the rebels have the railroad between Newbern and Morehead City, but may be forced to retire to Fort Macon.
As long as we can keep the river open we are well enough off.
The rebels captured by surprise the gunboat Underwriter, and destroyed her.
WASHINGTON, Friday, Feb. 5.
