...A recent open letter to the Writers Guild of America, written by a WGA member, is saying out loud what so many in the industry fear to say....
... [T]he story has resulted in a flood of emails sent to Film Threat. These correspondences paint a picture of an industry where fear of speaking out could result in one being “blacklisted” as problematic... A phrase we heard over and over again is this: “male and pale is stale.”
A Modern Black List
I am a WGA member and wish to be anonymous.
My email isn’t real as I don’t want to accidentally give up an IP address and end up on a modern Black List.
I have a few stories that illustrate the hostility to ‘non-diverse’ writers that may be of interest: ....
DEI is Being Weaponized
You’re so right about the fear running this town. But this is the first time when I’ve been afraid to say anything about how DEI is being weaponized. I’ve been a liberal progressive my entire life, and a few of the Emmy-nominated shows I’ve worked on actively advanced the causes being fought for — but now it’s like I’m no longer wanted at the table solely because of my age, gender & skin color.
Trouble in Other Entertainment Industry Guilds
I’m a senior illustrator in the Art Directors guild. I just watched your video on the WGA DEI checkboxes. The ADG was sending these surveys out at an extremely aggressive level last year.... There was also something they called J.E.D.I Training Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion training. Iatse ran a similar census that they said was voluntary but was aggressive in members insisting they participate....

Great post. The article is good too.
Okay, so nothing to do with women's golf ...
Yup. That’s the Nerdrotic video I linked in #1 above. Did you mean to post a different one? He has a lot of good stuff.
If we rounded up Nerdrotic and eleven of his pals to serve as jury on Disney’s fate, the vote would come back 18-0 in favor of conviction and execution — 18-0 because half of them would vote twice.
I too have started buying DVDs and Blu-Rays of movies that I think are keepers. I gave away a lot of VHS tapes years ago and I guess I really don’t regret that. It’s not as durable a medium, and I was a lot younger when I got those and, looking back, there probably aren’t many that would interest me today.
Trust the streamers as curators of the film libraries? Nope. Not only are films pulled from circulation, but the editing is slowly ramping up. When Turner Classic Movies and the Criterion Collection got caught censoring classic films — without acknowledgement to viewers — trust is irretrievably gone.
Ditto that! Along with the Geeks & Gamers site, Drunk 3PO, That Star Wars Girl, and the others all these sites reference.
Long live the Fandom Menace!
I subscribe to several of these, but there are a couple of new ones. I will check them out. Thanks.
I did not suddenly get sophisticated. My wife and I upgraded our tv two years ago and, for the first time, had a smart tv. The algorithm is doing its thing. I know that I'm being fed more of what I've been watching, which raises the risks of siloing and new blind spots, but there's wealth of good stuff out there of which I was unaware.
Mal and pale is....SUPREME!!!
Yeah, this guy dug his own grave, I don’t even feel sorry for him, let the whole industry go up in flames.
Hollywood is setting the stage for their own demise.
Hollywood is destroying its future...
The public desires good entertainment and they are NOT delivering!
Advances in tech have made it possible for amateurs to produce content just as polished as Hollywood and outlets like Rumble give them a powerful distribution ability.
Hollywood will never wise up and make product the public desires, they will be steamrolled by talented people smart enough to produce good entertainment on a budget...
Hollywood produces overpriced, woke productions that people are not willing to pay to see... most won’t watch bootleg copies for free.
Many woke TV productions are being bested in viewership by youtube channels producing stuff like toy unboxing videos... it’s a new world of niche entertainment and Hollywood is old, woke and very tired.
“...and leaving a lot of money on the table.”
That’s exactly right. They don’t make money off me.
Competitors jumped up to slug it out with GoFundMe and YouTube. I’m sure there are others. Maybe a group will tackle the movie industry.
Thanks for the ping.
Every fricking advert has either a black family or mixed race family. OTOH, there has never been a better time for black actors.
If you have to show diversity and there are only two or four people in the ad, what are you going to do?
I’m guessing the clients demand this in most instances. For one thing, they want to punch as many customer buttons as possible. For another, they live in dread that someone will complain about their “racist” advertising, perhaps with a formal complaint or perhaps on social media. All it takes is one crank and the social media zealots will take over.
