Male and Pale is Stale: Responses to an Open Letter to the WGA
Film Threat ^ | February 1, 2024 | Chris Gore

...A recent open letter to the Writers Guild of America, written by a WGA member, is saying out loud what so many in the industry fear to say....

... [T]he story has resulted in a flood of emails sent to Film Threat. These correspondences paint a picture of an industry where fear of speaking out could result in one being “blacklisted” as problematic... A phrase we heard over and over again is this: “male and pale is stale.”

A Modern Black List

I am a WGA member and wish to be anonymous.

My email isn’t real as I don’t want to accidentally give up an IP address and end up on a modern Black List.

I have a few stories that illustrate the hostility to ‘non-diverse’ writers that may be of interest: ....

DEI is Being Weaponized

You’re so right about the fear running this town. But this is the first time when I’ve been afraid to say anything about how DEI is being weaponized. I’ve been a liberal progressive my entire life, and a few of the Emmy-nominated shows I’ve worked on actively advanced the causes being fought for — but now it’s like I’m no longer wanted at the table solely because of my age, gender & skin color.

Trouble in Other Entertainment Industry Guilds

I’m a senior illustrator in the Art Directors guild. I just watched your video on the WGA DEI checkboxes. The ADG was sending these surveys out at an extremely aggressive level last year.... There was also something they called J.E.D.I Training Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion training. Iatse ran a similar census that they said was voluntary but was aggressive in members insisting they participate....

Why bother to nuke Hollywood from orbit when it is beginning to nuke itself?

I was debating whether to post this but then was motivated by packagingguy's post a few minutes ago: Senior BBC Employee Branded White People a "Parasitical Deviant Breed" I figured if the BBC was queued up for torching, I might as well toss Woke Hollywood onto the pyre just for fun.

The Film Threat story has been updated for a couple of days running. I've linked to today's version. There's a short intro, but then click on "continue" to see the attached emails.

Since I like to play the contrarian, I submit that this is actually a good news story. If you do read through the emails, you will see that they confirm your worst impressions of Woke Hollywood. So why a good news story? Because on my optimstic days, I think we are past peak woke. All of these emails come from insiders. I have the sense that the resistance is growing. I don't know when it will reach critical mass, but a lot of people are starting to speak up. This will grow. How it will play out in the long run, I don't know, but I think the pushback is coming. We've already seen rounds of firings of DEI commissars by some of the streamers. It's happening in corporate America as well. Red State legislatures and governors are starting to punch back. At least some of the athletic federations are standing up to the trans insanity. And Europe seems to be well ahead of the U.S. in prohibiting the transitioning of minors. These are all fronts in the same war: same enemy, same poisonous ideas, same dishonest concealment, same activist groups pulling the strings behind the curtain, same pressure tactics against targets.

This reaction is building across the spectrum. I think the era of asymmetrical warfare is coming to an end. When Ivy League universities are forced to fire presidents over this, we know the counterfire is having an effect.

If you don't know the Film Threat guys, I'll just say they're interesting. I was unaware of them a year ago. On the movie front, I knew Critical Drinker, Andrew Klavan, and the Daily Wire crowd. I was oblivious to the small army of critics -- some of them (ahem) somewhat "colorful" -- all across social media who have been lambasting woke entertainment and the wokification of pop culture for years. Some of them inhabit domains of which I know nothing: comic books, manga, and video gaming being prominent among them. Many of them are people I would have avoided merely on the basis of appearance had I tripped over them on YouTube. Then last year, I started poking around about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and discovered Nerdrotic, and I then noticed that several other freepers have found him as well. Here's a recent sample in which he's riffing off the Film Threat piece:Why Hollywood is FAILING - The Devil's in The DEI

No, I still don't really care about comic books, manga, video gaming, etc., just as many freepers don't care any more about movies. That's ok. Each to his own. But from a culture war standpoint, I'm glad to know these guys are out there. They are on our side. They're shooting at the same enemy. They aren't playing defense; they -- like Critical Drinker, who you know -- are preparing the battlefield, stirring up the fan base (what is left of it) before every new Disney release or woke tentpole from another studio. And they're having fun doing it; ridicule is something the woke left can't stand. They are also interested in these domains -- for reasons I can't fathom, but to each his own -- so they actually watch the woke stuff just so they know what they are talking about when they set out to rage about what Disney (and others) are doing to the franchises to which they are still attached.

If I were a military history buff with a particular interest in the war in the west from Normandy to the Rhine, I would still want to know something about the Mediterranean and North Africa, the Battle of the Atlantic, the Eastern Front, Nimitz's war in the central Pacific and MacArthur's war in the south Pacific, the CBI, etc. Same war. Same enemy. It's all connected. And the distance from the comic books to Harvard is a lot closer than it used to be.

On my good days, I think the balance is shifting. Our side is starting to learn how to punch back.

“I’ve been a liberal progressive my entire life...”

In other words, he helped create this monster and is only whining now that the monster turned on him. Boo hoo.

Thanks for the tip.

I’m not so sure I like the script-heavy interface.

Critical Drinker is enjoyable. .

The other night I watched the 2010 movie The A-Team on HBO max cuz I was bored. Never watched it before because it got bad reviews. It was a really fun popcorn movie. Well worth checking out if you are bored and want a fun action flick.

This is some amazing BS they're trying to get all the creatives to swallow and regurgitate on command.

This is lunacy, but like all Stalinist products, it's very organized and consistent lunacy. From the outward signs, it's being run by one committee somewhere with a lot of connections, and it's obvious there is a particular goal: Seizure of political power to "transform" (0bama word) our country's form of government permanently--by force and perverse law. I am certain that 0bama is involved.

Their method appears to be to replace and re-shape the opinion-shapers as a means to have all entertainment and communications shape the public mind--and to terrorize the private mind until it effectively ceases to exist.

You can already see their line is that unless you affirmatively embrace their hive-thought of the month or the week, you are the enemy, and can be bankrupted, imprisoned or killed without hesitation or consequences.

This is intended by these Stalinists to be our country's second and final civil war. These are dangerous people who need to be investigated right now--and strategically and thoroughly taken down.

The sooner the streaming model collapses, the better. Beyond that, it’s a question of what will emerge from the rebuilding. We’re obviously going to see more and more foreign films. As the major studios crash and burn, my hope is that we’ll see the emergence of at least some new players from the indie ranks that recognize the opportunity for counter-branding. But they will need financing and distribution, and that’s where the streamers have a chokehold.

I’d love to see a Korean company buy Disney and fire all the woke types. I’m also partial to the little indie films with a writer-director team of one. It’s hard for the DEI types to impose racial quotas there.

And now you’re shocked to find that the monster you helped to create has turned on you? Geez, you work in the film industry. Haven’t you ever *watched* any movies? “Monster turns on and destroys its creator” has only been the theme of, like, every horror movie ever since James Whale made Frankenstein in 1931.

The music industry went through something like this in the early 2000s when digital distribution and recording technology blew everything apart and weakened the major players. IMO the resulting democratization of music has been a disaster with quality falling off a cliff and little sign of recovery in sight. To me the lesson is that you need discerning central gatekeepers with big money to channel resources to truly worthy projects undertaken by the most talented people. Otherwise you don’t get great art. You just get a whole bunch of pretty good art. There seems to be a critical mass required for great art to happen. Possible I’m just being negative but based on what I’ve seen of the music industry, I’m not comforted by the thought of indy filmmakers filling the void left by the big studios.
