(Chorus) It never breaks, it never stalls It's not too big, no too small A little rusty, but so am I 90's Tacoma, wish you were mine...

(Chorus)
No backup camera, no fancy screen Tape stuck in the deck, no MP3 No navigation, no leather seats What it don't have, you don't need
(Chorus, tag: 90's Tacoma, you'll never die
A little fun for Sunday, I have 3 friends who have put over 300k miles on old Toyota Tacomas. They are still out there running all over the place. And they can handle some fairly serious 4-wheel trails.
My 2004 Tundra has 209k and runs like the day I drove it off the lot.
I owned one and a 4 runner. I can vouch that they are extremely rugged, dependable and maintain a high resale value. Not to mention, so fun! At that time I lived in New England and there was no weather that ever stopped them and the Tacoma got my infant son to Children’s Hospital in Boston when the ambulance drivers wouldn’t (absolutely refused) to transport him there from Lawrence General during a storm that had the highways literally shut down. Saved his life, in my opinion.
Awesome, and it will likely go a lot further with just maintenance. I have a 2009 Frontier Crewcab 4WD with 144k, it’s been incredible. Added a low-mileage 2016 F150, I should be covered for the duration.
Great story, thanks for sharing!
I have a ‘97 Takoma. A woman gave it to me in exchange for $500 worth of banjo lessons! It ran great but the A/C wasn’t working. However, it had brand new Michelin tires on it! And, she missed half her lessons!
Every time I stop to get gas some stranger comes up and tries to buy it! It is AWESOME!
Dude, I love that! I know a guy who restores and sells Volkswagon Camper Vans and makes a fortune! The same thing could be done with Tacomas. I’m tempted to rent a big barn and start filling it with old Tacomas.
Before that there was the Tacoma aroma, smellable for 10s of miles.
My grandson is enjoying carefree driving in my old ‘04 Taco that has 427,000 miles on it.
Wow!
I had a Japan-built ‘95 Hilux, which is the same year the Tacoma came out. They overlapped that year.
It was a good truck. Had it for 14 years. I’ve had my 2001 Ranger for 15 years (bought it used in 2009) and it is still going strong without any major repairs, though it does burn up alternators every three or four years.
“over 300k miles on old Toyota Tacomas”
I put over 300k on my 87 Toyota Supra Turbo.
When i finally sold it the engine still purrred like the day i bought her.
So smooth..
There are a some of those old Rangers running around here, they all seem to be white. They get cut a lot by the auto-raters but I think it’s only specific years that have problems.
That’s interesting as turbos are known for being hard on motors. Don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve read that. I have twin turbos on the F150, love the effortless feel in the mountains.
I scored a 2013 Tacoma this summer one owner, 100K miles, and a ton of service records. The guy even had the cabin air filter changed out on a regular schedule! The amount I drive now, it is a forever truck.
There are 9 Toyota pickups on my street which only has 11 houses. My neighbor has an ‘85, ‘94, and just took delivery of a 2023 he special ordered just the way he wanted it.
Mine is white.
I had an 1988 stepped down single cab.
The one that the beds all rusted out.
I sold that in 1999 when I bought a brand new extended cab V6 Tacoma.
I sold that one back to Toyota for Kelly Blue Book Full Retail for $14700.
I used that as the down payment on a 2012 V5 Double Cab long bed.
It has 106m miles.
I don’t want to sell it because it is the best vehicle I have ever owned.
I put 230k on a 95 Tacoma, then sold it to my then-yard guy who bugged me about it for at least 2 years. It’s probably still going strong somewhere in Mexico
The speed limit changes from 35 to 55 at the light and that lady had it up to ramming speed to beat the yellow … but it wasn’t even close. Cop told me later she shouldn’t have been driving. Yeah, so I noticed.
Actually, I don’t remember anything, but apparently she knocked the LF wheel off the truck when she hit me more or less in the center of the intersection. I don’t what happened to her car, but the truck kept going, kinda like a mortally wounded animal just hit by a car and trying to get off the road to safety. And that’s where she died, right there in that ditch not even a half a mile from home.
Me? I woke up in a very bright and very cold room on a cold, hard steel table, unable to open my eyes because of the bright light and wearing only my underwear. I have woken up from some strange dreams before, but nothing like this! I had no idea where I was or why … and, more importantly, why I was only wearing my underwear?!? Maybe back when I was younger and just had my first beer or few, this would make sense, especially if I was also hugging a toilet. But no, I’m way too old for nights like that and I think I was on my way to the grocery store, so wth happened to me??
The hospital only kept me overnight that time, but the world was very surreal for a long time after that one. Fwiw, I really don’t recommend multiple head trauma, but I’m okay, I think … well, as far as I know anyway. If not, I hope someone will tell me. Can’t say the same for my poor ol’ Tacoma, though, and I shed a tear now just thinking about her and how she died saving me. Hey, can’t ask for more than that, right?
I ordered another one, more or less the same color, too, same ARE camper shell and everything, but it just wasn’t the same. Maybe that saying about how you can’t go home again is right. The second generation Tacoma is a nice truck, but it’s a very different vehicle compared to the first gen.
I think my ‘98 first generation Tacoma was gorgeous, slim, curvy and athletically strong and sexy like a 20 something coed girl. Otoh, my 2011 second gen Tacoma is like that same girl, but now she’s more like a practical 30s something mom with a couple of kids. Definitely still curvy and definitely as sexy as she ever was, but … well, she’s a bit larger now and more well proportioned. She’s comfortable to be with and still makes me feel good every time I see her. Life is good.
Otoh, the third gen, to me, looks kinda like that same girl, but now she’s a late 40s something who’s slimmed down and maybe had some cosmetic surgery here and there, too. She’s lost her extra curves and is much more angular now.
People definitely still notice her! She’s fun to be with, same as always, smarter, too, and more sophisticated with age. Still a good-looking girl, but she’s not for me. I’m keeping my 2011 Barcelona red SBDC and hopefully I won’t ever have to replace her, especially not like the last time.
But if I do, it won’t be with a new one. I do love technology, but not all of it and I really hate keyless only for starting the engine and for opening doors. That feature used to be an option, but now it’s a standard equipment on almost everything. I don’t want to depend on a little battery to get in or start the engine. I want a key. And I want a manual transmission, too, and mechanical linkage connecting my foot to the motor rather than via a computer interface.
Less is more!
