The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a small plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean in Northern California and a woman's body was found in the sea near the wreckage.
An FAA spokesperson told USA TODAY a single-engine Cozy Mark IV crashed into water on Sunday near Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. Aviation officials said the crash took place about 7:30 p.m. and two people were on board the plane.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reported the aircraft took off from the East Bay and shortly after, authorities responded to reports of "a small airplane flying erratically near Moss Beach."
Witnesses observed the aircraft before it disappeared from sight and, the sheriff's office reported, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and a California Highway Patrol plane were deployed to assist local first responders.
The plane, according to the sheriff's office, was later found upside down in the water near Ross Cove.
Later that evening, local authorities reported, debris was found in the ocean near the coastline, "consistent with parts from a plane."
On Monday, crews on a commercial fishing boat found a woman's body in the water around where the plane crashed. The body was taken to the coroner's office and an identity is still being determined.
As of Tuesday, the second person on board had not been located.
U.S. Coast Guard crews scoured nearly 30 square miles by helicopter and by boat after the crash searching for victims. The search was called off Monday night, the outlet reported.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation on Tuesday by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Around 10 pm Sunday, my son read about this crash. Turns out people eating at the Moss Beach Distillery heard and saw it happen. The Half Moon Bay airport is very close by, less than a mile away.
Another article in the "San Francisco Standard" reported:
Melissa Richter was dining on a patio at Moss Beach Distillery when she said she heard an engine losing power, "like you hear in the movies, when a plane is about to crash." The plane came over the top of the building, she said."We figured something was wrong, because it was so close to the restaurant," Richter told KRON-TV. She said the engine cut out, and the plane "banked in, and we lost sight of it at that point."
I remember going to Half Moon Bay beach a number of years ago. The waves were scary big. There were signs too warning visitors of ‘waves of unusual size and force’
Sharks too. But it is the site of the Mavericks for surfing competition, so yes, big waves.
The waves breaking on the reef at Mavericks off of Pillar Point (close by) were 40 ft high a couple weeks ago.
Big waves and huge pumpkins some are way over a ton.
From Wikipedia
The Cozy Mark IV is a 4-seat, single engine, homebuilt light aircraft designed by Nat Puffer, with parts and plans supplied by Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. The aircraft is built from plans using basic raw materials. It is not a kit aircraft, though many small parts are available prefabricated.
“...huge pumpkins...” in the bay?
Paging John Denver...
Yes. And a big pumpkin festival.
At 7:30 p.m. launching out of Half Moon Bay you are immediately over the darkest ocean you can imagine. It’s no place to be flying for the faint-hearted under the best of conditions.
Mezza Luna? Same people who ran the one in Brentwood implicated in the Simpson/Goldman murders?
Looks like a Bert Rutan design ripoff.
The plane left an East Bay airport. Not sure why they would fly due west and go out over the ocean at night. It sounds like the plane was low and sputtering over the Moss Beach Distillery which is almost right next door to the Half Moon Bay airport.
I never heard of that before. I have no idea if there’s a connection between the Half Moon Bay restaurant and the old one in Brentwood. I couldn’t find anything about the Brentwood place other than a YouTube video of the building and this text...
“Real estate investment firm GPI Cos. bought the retail complex at 11572-11770 San Vicente Blvd. that was once home to Mezzaluna, an Italian restaurant where Nicole Brown Simpson dined on the last night of her life and where Ron Goldman worked as a waiter. Both were slain June 12, 1994. On the evening of Sunday, June 12, 1994, Goldman worked a server shift at Mezzaluna Trattoria, a restaurant located at 11750 San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, California.”
The Half Moon Bay restaurant opened in 1993. We’ve been going there since it opened.
You sure do have a memory!!
I quit flying July 1996, when TWA800 was shot down, and threw my pilot’s log & certificate in the trash. I wouldn’t get in that thing.
Sure does.
Heh.
With an engine making partial power after taking off to the north, going west is your only real choice. Going east takes you right into rising terrain. Straight ahead takes you to a built up area. Getting back to the airport by making a turn left is your best chance of survival. If you don’t make it to the airport, you might survive a graceful ditching. All this in the dark is tough. This time the chances were slim and none.
Too bad. This is an interesting aircraft.

They despise me.
