Update, 5 p.m.: The Grand County Sheriff’s Office stated that County Road 1/Trough Road is reopened. Please drive with caution.

A massive amount of snow has fallen across Grand County over the weekend triggering an avalanche and multiple highway closures. As of noon on Jan. 15 U.S. Highway 40 is still closed in both directions near Berthoud Pass while snow removal continues, Rabbit Ears Pass is closed in both direction on U.S. 40 and Colorado 125 is closed in both directions from mile point 0 to Forest Road 730, which is south of Walden.

While everyone is trying to navigate the closures they are turning to map apps to find alternate routes. Grand County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to verify and review their travel plans instead of solely relying on apps as some people have become stuck and other routes are closed to local traffic only.

Several vehicles became stranded on County Road 50/Church Park on the morning of Jan. 15 while taking an alternate route suggested by a map app. The sheriff’s office with the assistance of Grand County Road and Bridge were able to assist the stranded travelers and help them get back on the road.

“Unfortunately, these motorists all followed an online electronic mapping program that had misadvised County Road 50 was an alternate viable route to the Berthoud Pass closure. County Road 50 is not a sustainable winter travel route and all motorists are encouraged to individually review and verify their travel plans prior to relying solely on a mapping app,” the sheriff’s office wrote on its Facebook page Monday morning.

In addition, County Road 1/Trough Road is restricted to local traffic only due to safety concerns. Unless you live in the immediate area, motorists will not be able to use the route.

Erin Opsahl, the communications director for Grand County Sheriff’s Office explained that often when there are closures on U.S. 40 and Interstate 70 travel apps try to direct motorists to Trough Road and become stuck due to treacherous road conditions. There is very limited cell phone service on the road that exacerbates the problem.

“We are working with Google to update their mapping and not identify these local county roads as alternative travel routes,” Opsahl stated.

There’s a county road bypass around the main pass which is at 11,307 ft elevation? Sure…

Must be Los Angeles transplants.

Tom-Tom tried to send me (in a 35’ motorhome towing an suv) down several one-lane roads off a secondary highway. For some reason it wanted me on the interstate, and I wanted to use other roads.
I ended up turning it off and just sticking to the paper maps we had.

I one time took a Ford Aerostar up County 54 east out of Tabernash trying to Meadow Creek Reservoir just to see it. Got miles and miles up that crooked ass one lane and the county had the road torn out with a loader putting in a new culvert. Had to back down about a mile before I could turn around — nasty.

A lesser issue for sure, but recently, Google Maps decided that my garage was a different address (three numbers away from my house). It assigned my garage the number to a house behind us. We started getting deliveries, pest control companies, the gas company, and others, just opening our gate and walking into our backyard. We knew because we have a motion-activated camera.

I had to go into Google Maps and ask for a correction to the map.

We were coming back from northern New Mexico before Christmas and the phone thang took me to a 13-mile section of dirt road covered in snow.

Never use Google maps to navigate. Google Maps is only good for informational purposes to see places and locations you may want to go to. Using Google maps to actually go there is a bad idea.

I live off of 2 decent roads. Google however would direct drivers to take a route through a secluded neighborhood. To “save” one minute.

went to look for a Florida gulfcoast beach my dad used to take us to when much younger. it was a well maintained government beach back in the day so wanted to relive a little history and explore the area. Google maps took us to the the beach alright. the government had sold the entire beach so it was all private homes except for the tiny area the residents left open for public use. decided to just explore the area so back to Google maps. there were what looked to be major roads, minor roads and platted neighborhoods close by so we followed one of the major roads in an adventure. paved roads turned into dirt roads that turned into logging roads that turned into logging truck and machinery ruts filled with mud and water. not a soul to speak of. just palmettos and scrub pines. barely got out thinking, what if we had gotten stuck out there? still use maps but only when close already and can SEE civilization.

Any map can be wrong, but GPS maps are frequently more misleading and misguided because they are “in the moment”. Drivers frequently have no common sense.
We live in western Colorado on a hill, driveway a steep 3/8 mile and idiots frequently zip in and insist that there is a way off the cliff behind our house to go through our neighbors’ cow pasture to o get to another road that doesn’t exist. And then are frequently angry because they didn’t read the No Trespassing/Private Driveway sign at the entrance they zoomed through. The semi truck driver was especially upset because he had to back out, and took almost half hour.

The dogs watched.
