Urgent search underway after plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean south of San Francisco near Half Moon Bay

An airplane crashed into the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean after 'flying erratically' near an airport south of San Francisco Sunday evening, authorities said.

Sgt. Philip Hallworth of San Mateo County Sheriff´s Office said crews were searching for the plane that went down in Half Moon Bay around 7:15 p.m..

Officials have recovered some wreckage, reports ABC San Francisco, but there is still no word on possible survivors. It's not clear how many people were on board at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred a few miles from the Half Moon Bay Airport on the Cabrillo Highway, Hallworth said. The airport is located in Moss Beach, about 22 miles south of San Francisco.

The U.S. Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol and fire crews also responded to the crash site.

One witness described the plane as 'kind of big' adding that she heard the engine 'puttering' before the crash. In a report by CBS San Francisco, the plane was said to be a two-propeller plane.

'We were having dinner out on the patio, and we heard this motor engine puttering -- like you hear in the movies, when a plane is about to crash. And you hear the engine, and it came around the corner. It's kind of a big plane, very visible,' witness Melissa Richter told the ABC affiliate.

'We figured something was wrong, because it was so close to the restaurant. And then, it was definitely pivoting back and forth, and then it looked like it put on the gas, went a little bit faster, then it went down and the engine cut out. Then it banked in, and we lost sight of it at that point,' she added.

Videos broadcast from local media show a rescue helicopter hovering over the waters close to San Francisco.

[...described the plane as ‘kind of big’...]

At first glance, I thought this was a new FAA DEI hire, but it was actually a civilian witness.

crews were searching for the plane ... Officials have recovered some wreckage

Folks that are searching probably should talk to the folks that recovered the wreckage.

why oh why does it only take one word for my mind to turn tragedy into comic relief? “Puttering” made me think Golf. golf made me think putting green. putting green made me think of how quiet it is when putting. the quiet made me hear the “puttering” sound of a golf ball circling just before dropping into the cup. the circling the cup made me think of...damn! doing it again. does anyone else have this problem?

“It’s not clear how many people were on board at the time of the crash.”

If it was a larger aircraft, then it would have been flown by a more experienced pilot who would have filed a flight plan.

They include basic information such as departure and arrival points, estimated time en route, alternate airports in case of bad weather, type of flight (whether instrument flight rules [IFR] or visual flight rules [VFR]), the pilot’s information, number of people on board, and information about the aircraft itself.

That would have answered those questions about who, what , where.

When I was a young Silicon Valley Engineer with a new pilots license, this was a great long lunch trip to fly Palo Alto to Half Moon Bay for fish and chips at that restaurant. There was a looong taxiway with parking at one end of the airfield that had a gate close to town.

If a “”reporter” can’t provide more info than this, maybe they should just wait. Based on this story, it could have been a Cessna, could have been a 747.

We’ve lived parallel lives. Before pilot training I flew to lunch in my bosses V tail Bonanza. 35 if I recall. We went to lunch about once per month. Nut Tree, Columbia or wherever.
Milt flew B17’s in WWII and couldn’t stand feet on the ground. After soloing, I gave it up. Air traffic in the bay area killed the fun. Crossed Moffat with permission and had to dive from an inbound P3. Almost got speared by an F15 out of Alameda. Built a house near Seiad Valley on the river.Still have it but have not been there since my wife checked out.
