Psychedelic mushrooms sprung up some 67 million years ago, more than 65 million years before humans ever existed, according to the most extensive genomic study examining these types of fungi. Scientists, who published their work this week in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, found that of the more than 50 species in the Psilocybe genus, 35 had a novel gene arrangement that coded for psilocybin, the hallucinogen that gives Psilocybe mushrooms their psychedelic quality. Previous studies had identified a single, different genetic pathway to the production of psilocybin, but the new work opens up the possibility of other ways to create the hallucinogen, Vice reports. People are increasingly using psychedelic mushrooms to help manage symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies could exploit these new pathways for psilocybin production to create synthetic versions of it or find related compounds in Psilocybe species.

The researchers took enough of them that they were actually able to *go back in time* and *see them begin*. ;^)
I’ve never understood the attraction of altering your brain chemistry for fun. Sometimes it doesn’t return to “normal” and psychosis is the result. Hard pass.
Hell, I was given ketamine for a medical procedure last March and I’m still processing that experience.

The flashbacks go back that far? That is a long time to wait.
“Hell, I was given ketamine for a medical procedure last March and I’m still processing that experience.”
I was on the table for a leg rebuilding surgery when the anesthesiologist had a syringe of BRIGHT YELLOW fluid and was ready to inject into the tubing going into my arm...
I asked what it was, ‘Curare’ was the reply.
Boy did I react!
The anesthesiologist said: ‘Oh I see you know what curare is.’
“YES!” was my reply...
He said it was a mild muscle relaxant and that all would be well — also that I would smell onions...
Instructed to count backwards from 10, I said ‘ten, nine, eight - I smell onions...’
Six hours later I woke up to remember the experience.
Psychedelic mushrooms go back millions of years
- that is one hell of a trip! So how long would the trip last?
What articles such as this never tell you is why plants have these effects. The truth of the matter is it’s a defensive system for survival for continued propagation. It is a toxin. Animals eat something and that has a negative toxic affect and they might never eat it again humans on the other hand like the buzz and return to it over and over.
The Earth isn’t over six million years old.
All mushrooms are edible.
Some only once.

Yes, it is.
LOL
Yeah, well, the waitress should have taken it back.
One of the smoother head meds.
I have sat with several people who were having bad trips from LSD or strong MJ. I would ask them if what they are feeling now reminds them of something that felt this way in the past. THey have remembered past experiences when they felt frightened, hurt, or abandoned. I would encourage them to tell me about that time, they would remember more, and after a while their current feeling would begin to make sense based on older feelings and life events. When their senses returned to normal, they were glad to have discovered hidden portion of their history and sometimes connected these early experiences to important parts of their current life.
The important thing I found was to reassure them these feelings would not overwhelm them and answers could be found by exploring the feelings and regaining control over them.
