NBC sees the $110 million NFL playoff game airing exclusively on Peacock as a doorway into a much bigger house.
The Chiefs host the Dolphins on Saturday night on the NBC streaming service which is in about 30 million homes, less than half the reach of NBC and the other three broadcast networks, and voices ranging from sports radio legend Mike Francesa to Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu already have griped about it.
Asked by The Post in an exclusive interview what he would say to the detractors, newly minted NBC Sports president Rick Cordella understood the consternation but emphasized the “halo effect” of all the other sports and entertainment properties for subscribers to enjoy on the platform.
“Look, I think any time there’s change there will be people that talk about it. We saw that with WWE and English Premier League,” he said.
“We survey our users on Peacock every month, and know that [their fans] are two of the most highly satisfied cohorts overall. I think the big thing with our game on Saturday night is we have to do a great job explaining all the great content that we have on our platform.”
Therefore, Cordella, 47, explained, it’s “not a pay-per-view.”
The playoff game the streaming service is airing features a lot of star power, including generational talents such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, as well as Tua Tagovailoa who has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since Mike McDaniel became the Dolphins’ head coach last season.
In addition to the aforementioned WWE premium live events, including the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, and English soccer, Peacock has exclusive Big Ten football and basketball and simulcasts of NBC Sports properties such as “Sunday Night Football” and the Olympics.

I get pissed that the only game I can’t get is on Fox. I have to watch over the air as I don’t have cable.
Paramount is cbs and peacock is NBC.
And the millions of Swifties paying to see Taylor.
More subscriptions, less ownership
It’s called ‘A la Cart Programming’ and has been suggested for decades, but the cable and dish companies will not do it....................
It’s worse than that. We pay the cable companies, and the networks pay them too. Then you have to watch paid commercials. Then you have to pay for internet, and streaming on top of that if you want to.
The cable oligopoly needs to be broken up the way Ma Bell was broken up. I cut the cord last year, and do save some money but have to be vigilant about cancelling streaming services. I have decided to wait for show seasons to be complete before subscribing and then watching them all inside a month - then cancel. I just canceled Hulu and Paramount+ Maybe I’ll get Peacock not for this game, but to binge Yellowstone.

(5) Browns at (4) Texans, 4:30 p.m. ET (NBC, fubo). For just the second time in 20 years, the Browns are in the playoffs. These two teams met back in Week 16, but you probably shouldn’t take too much away from that 36-22 win by Cleveland because C.J. Stroud didn’t play. The Texans superstar rookie will be on the field this week and he’ll be facing one of his biggest tests of the season in the Browns defense.
(6) Dolphins at (3) Chiefs, 8 p.m. ET (Peacock). Tyreek Hill is going to get a second chance at beating his former team, and this time, he gets to do it in Kansas City. These two teams did meet back in Week 9 in a game that Kansas City won 21-14, but that game was played in Germany. The temperature in Kansas City is expected to be hovering around 6 degrees when the game kicks off on Saturday night.
Sunday, Jan. 14
(7) Steelers at (2) Bills, 1 p.m. ET (CBS/stream on Paramount+ (click here). This game will be played in Buffalo, where the Bills have been nearly unbeatable this year, going 7-1. Josh Allen has faced the Steelers four times in his career and he’s gone 3-1 in those games. The Sunday forecast in Buffalo is calling for sub-freezing temperatures with possible snow.
(7) Packers at (2) Cowboys, 4:30 p.m. ET (Fox, fubo). This will be a revenge game for Mike McCarthy. This will mark just the second time that the Cowboys coach has faced the Packers since being fired by them in December 2018. McCarthy lost the first meeting in 2022 and will be looking to get his first win over Green Bay.
(6) Rams at (3) Lions, 8 p.m. ET (NBC, fubo). For their first home playoff game in 30 years, the Lions will be welcoming an old friend back to Detroit: Matthew Stafford. The Rams QB led the Lions to the playoffs three times, but never got to play a home game. This will also be a huge game for Jared Goff, who will be facing a team and a head coach that traded him away because they didn’t want him anymore.
Monday, Jan. 15
(5) Eagles at (4) Buccaneers, 8:15 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN, fubo). The Eagles are stumbling into the playoffs, but they will head to Tampa Bay knowing that they beat the Buccaneers 25-11 at Raymond James Stadium back in Week 3.
When baseball was king. All the games were on local radio, and often on remote stations (Ronald Reagan famously announced games off a telegraph feed in Des Moines, Iowa for the Cubs). Well into the 70s, nearly all the Yankees and Red Sox games were on WPIX and WSBK over the air. All 162 Cubs games were broadcast on WGN.
Baseball, and hockey, and basketball chased the money. Pay cable was a drug that created quick hit of cash . . . at the cost of long-term fan support.
Now, baseball gets worse ratings than the NFL draft and pre-season exhibition games. The number of true “baseball” towns can be counted on one-hand (Boston, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, maybe Los Angeles). Baseball playoffs have been watered down with proliferation, and as the number of games multiplies the ratings for each game dwindles.
The NFL should not stupidly go down the same path.

people, if you don’t have this streaming service, please don’t get it for this football game.....be strong....
I agree. Ditched Direct TV paying $161.00 a month for their Choice programing and went streaming. I've got Peacock for $1.99 for six months and may or may not keep it after that.

These streamers have now started selling streaming rights to other streamers once they have lost their “utility”. For example HBO took Westworld off their slate and are selling it on Amazon on a per episode rental basis (though I think some of that may be due to personality - spite/anger between the producers and HBO as the producers got a $100M Netflix deal and did a crap job with Westworld season 4 so HBO cancelled S5 & S6 and then dumped it off). Showtime sold some shows to Netflix. Paramount had Yellowstone, but either they sold it to Peacock for streaming; or they only bought the broadcast rights and the producers sold steaming rights to Peacock which is confusing marketing and quite annoying to me because everyone told me to watch it, so I signed up to Paramount only to discover after the fact I needed Peacock.
you need to do a tutorial on FR on how to get these channels and how to ditch cable....
It would be different if there were no commercials, but they expect you to pay AND WATCH THE COMMERCIALS..............
Doesn’t bother me. I won’t watch it and life will go on. In the meantime, the NFL will lose customers, which will come back after the NFL figures out that the gamble didn’t work. But not all the customers won’t come back.
