Well, that didn't take long ...
Roughly 24 hours after parting ways with Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have hired a new head coach ... Jerod Mayo!!
ESPN's Adam Schefter just reported Robert Kraft made the decision on Friday morning, explaining the team will formally announce the move at a news conference next week.
According to Schefter, the Patriots were able to bypass the NFL's normal, lengthy hiring process because they had written in Mayo's most recent contract that he'd be Belichick's successor.
37-year-old Mayo becomes the youngest current NFL head coach. He's also the Pats' first-ever Black head coach.
Mayo has spent the entirety of his football career in Foxborough -- he was picked by New England in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft ... and played eight years for the org. alongside Tom Brady.
Following his career -- which included one All-Pro selection -- he joined Belichick's staff as a linebackers coach in 2019, holding that role until The Hoodie's departure this week.
The move will almost certainly be welcomed by most in Patriots Nation ... as Deion Branch just told TMZ Sports on Thursday he wanted someone from inside of the building to take over the vacant gig.
Very, very few people do not retire . . . . Every man I’ve EVER known has gotten to a point when he’s tired of workin’ for some else.
In a couple of years, or less, the Patriot’s fans will be calling for his firing.
Maybe he’s good at the job. But I assume they hired him for other reasons.
Why in Hades does that make any difference?
That’s RACISS!..................
It’s called a turnover. They cannot take away his spectacular career....I mean.....6 Super Bowls....who does that...
Belichick + Brady - a winning combination. They both needed each other. Looks like when one left the other faltered and soon left as well.
Belichick was forced out.
And then slimy Kraft tried to claim that Belichick is the one who chose to spend less on the roster than the rest of the league.
“Why in Hades does that make any difference?”
Are you kidding? hell, that’s the whole point!
Mayo’s weak on experience (e.g., calling plays) and has no experience, either playing or coaching, with a pro team other than the Pats.
Brady moved on to win a SB without Bill.
DON’T HAVE THE FISH!...................
True enough.
Looks like Bill needed Brady more than the other way around.
I would not want to be the QB who followed Tom Brady and I would not want to be the coach who follows Belichick
After such an anomalous, atypical and improbable 20+ year run of success, regression to the mean will be in full force.
Bill was a great complement to Brady, but Brady was the more special and, ultimately, important.
He’s been DEFENSE his whole career.
We will see how he handles OFFENSE...................
He is well thought of in the fan base. His skin color isn’t an issue. If he doesn’t win..he will get the boot as well.
