Johnson hasn't ruled out a short-term spending bill in place of his agreement with Schumer but House conservatives don't support that either.
While the U.S. Treasury Department reports a $1.8 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2023, House Speaker Mike Johnson's speakership might be in peril as conservative backlash to his spending deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer grows louder.
According to the Treasury Department, the federal government has already run a $510 billion deficit in the first three months of fiscal year 2024.
Johnson hasn't ruled out moving forward with a short-term spending bill in place of his agreement with Schumer but House conservatives don't support that move either.
The tentative deal sets a top line for domestic and military spending through September 2024 at $1.6 trillion, which is within the perimeters of the Financial Responsibility Act of 2023 (FRA). The total breaks down to $886 billion defense spending and $773 billion for non-defense domestic spending. Defense spending has been rising year after year. In fiscal year 2023, the defense budget was about $853 billion.
The FRA is legislation that passed after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden struck a spending deal that raised the nation's debt ceiling.
The non-defense spending side also includes $69 billion in "adjustments," which conservatives have described as a side-deal. This package does not include the supplemental foreign aid package under consideration for Ukraine, Israel, and Palestinian refugees. Republicans are pushing for additional U.S. border security funding to be included in any foreign aid package that Congress passes.
Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., expressed doubt that significant spending cuts will happen in this current session of Congress.

“Avoid? I’m starting to think economic collapse is the PLAN.”
**************
The political elites ALWAYS have a plan. For themselves.
Probably some sun worshipping cross dressing faggot.
>>the Dems have the Senate and the presidency
And apparently the House too. Is having a Speaker who fights against socialism really so much to ask? It is the House that has the power of the purse, but the GOPe refuses to use it.
There is NO 2-party system. It is Washington against American.
*************
I totally agree.
The problem is there is no real conservative party representing us. The GOP is a fake party IMO.
Wouldn’t it be nice to vote for a party that actually stands for something?
And while the House stands alone as a Legislative body, it is checked by both the Senate and the Presidency.
Right. That's going to be the result.
Be of good cheer, though. Currencies die and are reborn all the time. How much were your Reichsmarks worth on May 9, 1945?
And think of it. All the destruction we have gone through, and will go through, leaves our transcontinental riches in place. No Dresden, no Hiroshima. Farmland, minerals, water, roads and rails, etc. Only worthless pieces of paper granting title to Blackrock and Vanguard, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America.
Just hope we don't run out of rope. It won't take 4 years to rebuild.
Invest in Samsonite. A lot of bags are going to have to be packed.
Representative government is intended to provide the citizen with persons who represent their values and will. This was to be accomplished through the election process where voters could remove those who failed to represent them. Unfortunately, much of today's electorate are ignorant or stupid. Also, the corporate (democrat) press, corporations and globalists are a huge thumb on the scale; they serve to "sell" democrat and RINO politicians to an ignorant electorate. This skewing by news organizations and super concentrations of wealth was something the Founders could not have seen.
We don't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. We also have a problem in that there does not appear to be any adult supervision inside the Beltway
“Invest in Samsonite. A lot of bags are going to have to be packed.”

Don’t know about that. The elites are crafy and always take care of themselves first and foremost.
When the SHTF the political elites (the same people who created the mess) will blame everyone but themselves for the economic collapse — and appoint themselves to fix it.
That’s how the system works. Get paid to screw things up and then get paid (even more) to pretend to fix the debacle they created.
Disagree! They could just write a budget say here it is, pass it as is if not too bad - the government shuts down. Constitutionally, they have that power. Why don’t they do it? Because a ‘million reasons’ line up outside the representative’s door telling them grandmas starve to death and the world ends! There’s always a “have-to-morally-imperative-reason” to spend money. To not spend money, not so much. It’s a friendless orphan!
Besides once all the constituents get their turn at the taxpayer hog trough the vote is forgotten about!
You think shutting down the government is a big nothing. Everyone it gets shut down, there’s a price to be paid. Maybe change the “rule” that government workers get a paid vacation, I’d consider it.
true
I didn’t say shutting down the government was a big nothing! politicians GOP & RAT, the media, etc. claim its then end of the world!
That's exactly how it works! Voters in blue cities have been electing the same old feckless grifters for decades because they have no critical thinking skills and choose to believe feelings over facts.
They have no more "power of the purse" than the Senate who has to also pass the same bill or it goes nowhere...and then be signed by the President or it ultimately goes nowhere.
With all due respect, even when that changes all we’ll hear from the R’s is “we need bigger majorities to get things done so vote for more of us next cycle”. Its the same old excuse election after election. The funny thing is that this game works for them as GOP voters are a gullible lot who fall for rhetoric and don’t much care about accountability.
That has, and does, make a substantial difference to have control and have control by margins that allow things to be passed. To suggest otherwise is simply not true...certainly not true to suggest we can be getting the same things passed into law with a nominal House majority with Dems controlling the Senate and the Presidency as would be with supermajorities and the Presidency - yet many apparently think that is an entirely reasonable expectation.
Y’all seem unaware that Chuck has the Senate and Joe has the, the, the, uh, veto pen.
So, say Mike J goes full conservative and puts forward a spending bill that makes the cuts y’all want.
Step one, the Dems and soft repubs kill it in the House.
Step two, by some miracle it passes the House. Chuck kills it.
So he courageously runs into a brick wall.
And you’re happy why?
“Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., expressed doubt that significant spending cuts will happen in this current session of Congress.”
No kidding.

Remember too that the House can also stipulate how money is spent. The Power of the Purse means just what it says.
Unfortunately, the Republican Party has long shown that it lacks the will to exert what power it has to stop the national economic train wreck that we are heading for. Madison would be dismayed at the current state of affairs.
The GOP's excuse for appeasement is always claiming they don't have enough votes. This scam has to end at some point. People are tired of it and want to see some genuine effort to reign in the reckless spending and relentless growth of government.
Its funny that you didn't post my quote about the GOP's persistent refusal cut funding for PBS. That in a nutshell shows just how weak and feckless the GOP is.
When the wheels come off the Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) will surely blame the Republicans. Its easy to put the blame on people who refuse to fight.
Lotsa stuff takes 60 votes in the Senate. Pelosi and Trump had a big fight over it during a LIVE conference at the White House. I think that’s the meeting she walked out on....
