Iconic Road Trip Restaurant on California’s U.S. 101 Shutters Abruptly After 99 Years

Road trippers leaving San Francisco for Southern California know that there are two places to stop for excellent split pea soup and even better fried chicken: the Pea Soup Andersen’s on U.S. 101 near Solvang, and the other Pea Soup Andersen’s on Interstate 5 in Santa Nella.

A year shy of its centennial, the 101 location—in the Central Coast town of Buellton, technically—has closed, as SFGate first reported. An icon of kitschy Danish culture recognizable by its windmill, it is slated to be demolished and rebuilt.

The Santa Nella location will remain open, as manager Armando Hurtado confirmed with The Standard.

“They’re going to redevelop it and make a new restaurant,” he said. “It’s going to take about a year. We’re not going anywhere.”

sorry to say that tinned soup is really crummy when compared with the soup they served at their Buellton US101 restaurant.

Too bad. I remember going there in about 1965, during a family vacation. Once in a while I’ll buy a can of Andersen’s split pea soup in the store even now.

It’s a facsimile...

I put fresh ground pepper in it...

Pea soup is one of the last things I have a taste for on a road trip.

pepper sounds like it could help ...
thanks

you may wish to try a tin of “Pacific Foods” split pea soup...(available possibly at your local grocer or if necessary it is also sold via that huge online retailer beginning with “A” and named after a river, but we won’t mention it here) it tastes quite a bit better than the Anderson tinned soup (actually gets eaten instead of just washed down the Insinkerator), and no doubt there are a number of better-tasting brands, too

cheers,

Drove past it many times on the way to and from Pismo Beach. All things change.

No way.

I heard rumors and even that it had closed already.

“ it’s a well-known stop much-loved by anyone driving down to Los Angeles who doesn’t feel like stopping at the In-N-Out in Kettleman City again.”

There’s an In n Out in Santa Nella, too. Other side of the freeway from Andersens.

You would think so until you taste it. Its quite good and I hate split pee sup. I believe they are cheating by adding lots a bacon. Those sneaky SOB's.

Sounds like its just a remodel anyway.

This was a required stop if we were taking the 101.

Story says that they’re planning on building a newer version at the same location, so maybe the tradition can continue.

Harris Ranch is still going strong, and the 5 is faster anyway, so it’ll be steak sandwiches instead of pea soup and bread until Anderson’s is rebuilt.

I have a picture of my folks posing in this. Funny thing is I thought the guy holding the chisel had on bandages from bad hits.

The In-and-Out Burger in Kettleman City is a good stopping point when driving between SF Bay area and LA, especially if you’ve got some place to be and not sightseeing.

It took me a few seconds and reading your comment to figure out what happened to the faces. Now it makes sense.

I recall eating there several times at the 101 location. Was never much of a pea soup guy, but I sure liked theirs.

OMG - my family has been stopping there since the 40s - we always stopped there in the 60s b/c the travelers’ special was .99 cents - endless bowls of soup, bread and a drink, including the choice of a milkshake, which came out in one of those tall metal containers. My dad could easily feed all of us kids for little money.

I don’t think the soup is that great - I make a far better split pea soup with a honey baked ham bone...

The very best place - IMO - and I travel this route up the 5 every other month - is the BBQ express at Harris Ranch - it is about 1/2 way between LA and SF outside of Coalinga.

Go inside the Shell Station and there is the Express BBQ in the back - their tri-tip or brisket and cheddar sandwiches can’t be beat. I also get their tri-tip taco salad which is always very fresh.

I travel with my dogs so this is a great place to stop - picnic table outside and a grassy area for the dogs.
