China's recent 'purge' of several top Army officials came after an embarrassing mishap where they'd mistakenly filled missiles with water instead of fuel, according to United States intelligence.
The news comes days after a startling New Year's message from ruler Xi Jingping, who warned that 'all Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait' will be 'reunified.'
The communist country's top lawmakers ousted nine senior military officers from the national legislative body on Friday, state media reported, a step that typically precedes further punishment.
Many of those removed were from the Rocket Force - a key arm of the Chinese army overseeing tactical and nuclear missiles.
Now, American intelligence claims military corruption led to the mistakes, which also included fields of silos in Western China fitted with lids that stopped the missiles from launching.
The purges are a setback for Xi who has pumped billions into buying and developing equipment as part of his modernizing efforts to build a 'world-class' military by 2050.
In accordance with those plans, Beijing's outsized defense budget has grown at a faster pace than the economy for some years.
The recent downfall of generals and military equipment suppliers, however, has punctured some of this aura, and raised questions over whether there has been adequate oversight over the massive military investments as China vies with the United States.
Since Xi took power in 2012, he has embarked on a wide-ranging anti-corruption crackdown among Communist Party and government officials, with the army being one of its main targets.
The nine generals removed from the legislature hailed from several military divisions; three were former commanders or vice commanders of the Rocket Force; one a former Air Force chief and one a Navy commander responsible for the South China Sea. Four officers were responsible for equipment.

lol my immediate thought, “hey Chang did you hook that up to the fuel truck or a hose spigot “
“Spigot, my bad “
.
Another take on this story (it’s a fake story put out by Xi to obfuscate the real reasons for the purges in his military):

Revealed by U S intelligence??? That must have been a shoutout to Xi, to let him know that he needed to check on the reliability of missiles aimed at the United States.
In more patriotic times, U S intelligence would have chuckled and let the situation continue.
So pulling the meter and placing two shunts it’s top pair of contacts before reinstalling requires an experienced electrician or engineer?
I think the the real challenge is to find a buddy on a power crew truck who has replacement seals for said meter.
Yes, I was wondering who shared this intel with the Chinese…..
“they’d mistakenly filled missiles with water instead of fuel”
Sure, it was a mistake. It’s not like the generals were selling fuel to line their own pockets like Russian officers were doing before the Ukraine invasion. That would be ridiculous!
They probably just told Biden and Biden kicked it up the chain of command to his boss Xi.
Shouldn’t the power company be able to tell that more juice was going out than was being metered and charged for?
Bingo—someone with authority should be asking that very question. Why are we publicizing non-functional Chinese ICBMs? Why would we even admit we know? It sure seems to be treason all the way down.
Traitor Joe couldn't wait to fill his chicom masters in on this, so now their missiles are again ready to destroy US cities.
Just a wild thought — Perhaps those generals didn’t want Xi to start a war and thus did the sabotage deliberately...or wanted to make sure they lost in a possible nuclear ICBM exchange.
The leaked “intelligence” that Bloomberg cites as its ultimate source leads inexorably to major questions. Under close examination the claims cited in the report seem to be fake.
The story is technically naive when it comes to China’s missiles. China does not keep its liquid-fueled rockets filled with propellant. This means they are empty sitting in silos. If fuel was stored in a rocket booster the internal tanks and plumbing would soon be ruined by corrosion. The military fuels them if there are warning conditions requiring loading the missiles with fuel.
There would be no reason to put water in the missiles unless it was deliberate sabotage. If it was deliberate sabotage China would not just be purging this or that official, they would have been arrested, tried and shot. - https://asiatimes.com/2024/01/water-in-chinese-missiles-tanks-is-a-fake-story/
