TOPICS: Chit/Chat
KEYWORDS:
You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

The point is that the most misattributed author in history, has his most famous idea attributed to him in a form he did not originate.

Does the German word begin with cyphertext W?

I’m wondering why the first letter is bracketed. I can’t think of another word (or set of words) that ends in cyphertext S without changing the meaning.

Got it. But I don’t understand it. The last 4 “words” give it away.

SPOILER:

The first letter is bracketed because it was not capitalized in the English language translation. The “About this document” section of the Fermi Lab web page: https://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/einstein/E_mc2/e_mc2.pdf

contains the following text:

The 1923 English translation modified the notation used in Einstein’s 1905 paper to conform to that in use by the 1920’s; for example, c denotes the speed of light, as
opposed the V used by Einstein in 1905. In this paper Einstein uses L to denote energy; the italicised sentence in the conclusion may be written as the equation “m = L/c2” which, using the more modern E instead of L to denote energy, may be trivially rewritten as “E = mc2”

I used the opportunity of this puzzle to show that one of the most misattributed authors in history is even misattributed for ideas he did originate. He did not say E = mc2, rather he said The Change in Inertia of a body = L/(V x V) where L is energy emitted by radiation, today we take for granted that mass (including gravitational mass) is equivalent to inertial mass, and V was the author’s symbol for the speed of light.

Happy New Year!
