We made our (famous) Red Velvet Cake for Christmas Dessert. My wife did the hard work.
Now everybody wants the recipe and I refuse to give it up.
I have even offered to make them one, but I'm not giving up the recipe.
Am I wrong? My wife thinks I'm being a bit selfish.

Why make a red velvet cake when you could make a pecan pie or strawberry shortcake (depending on season) instead?

Thank you, because I don’t use icing. I make the best frosting.

Nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah.
This is way better than your crummy ol' cake.

Probably so. But I have to warn you...Red Dye 40 is a synthetic
food dye made from petroleum and is a known health risk.

It’s your recipe. Do with it as you will.

You don’t need it. Buttermilk turns unprocessed cocoa red. Both are needed in red velvet (I guess sour cream could sub for buttermilk)

Honestly, this is so trivial in my mind. With all the other problems in the world, how can you be concerned about sharing your precious recipe. Be honored anyone might want it.
I’ve spent years doing family history research for many families, and have lots of it online. I encourage people to copy it right out and share with others. That recipe won’t be any good at all when you’re dead unless you share it.
That’s MY opinion. I will hope that you will change yours, but if you don’t, then that’s ok. It’s YOUR opinion, and you’re allowed to have it.

I never have figured out red velvet cake. Lots of red food coloring, a little bit of cocoa and cream cheese icing. Give me a real chocolate cake with the same cream cheese icing and I would be far happier.

Tommy, sorry but I think your attitude is narcissistic.

When I was a kid and my friends wanted to “borrow” my bicycle I always snuck a few parts off the brakes before I loaned it out. We had a lot of hills in the neighborhood. Did the same thing in the Winter with my Flexible Flyer snow sled. More or less.

But I did share.
I shared the Red Velvet Cake we made (from my recipe) with family and friends.
They loved it, they're too kind. I am honored they would ask for my
recipe. It's not like it's the only recipe though.
Although when I start my Cakery, they'll have to start paying.

people only hang out with you because of your baking? that is strange.

Well, I believe it is. I've had it for, let's see, maybe better than 25 years.

You wrote a post asking if you were selfish for not sharing the recipe and then you say you did share? Which is it? I think it’s weird when people recipe hoard. What’s the purpose?
