Russian forces surrendered today in Bakmhut after failing to take Ukrainian positions and being counterattacked by the Ukrainian police. Russian forces appear to be surrendering in higher numbers due to the cold weather and poor logistics of the Russian army. Ukraine is continuing to try and push out of Krynky which the Russians are panicking over at the moment.

Day 666: Dec 21
Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kherson region.
In light of the increased hostilities along the eastern front, Ukrainian operations in the Kherson region started playing an increasingly important role. In fact, the last month has proved that Ukrainian operations on the eastern bank of the river are of strategic significance because Russians are forced to deploy their reserves to this region instead of devoting them to their offensive campaign.
The strategic importance became apparent approximately 2 weeks ago when Russians suddenly increased the intensity of ground operations by up to 20 times and started conducting one mechanized assault after another. Last time, I showed combat footage where Ukrainians destroyed more than 10 pieces of heavy equipment in one day, which at that time constituted 10% of all losses in heavy equipment over all preceding days, so the increase in intensity was sudden and huge. Some analysts concluded that Ukrainian operations and the threat of potential expansion are interfering with the Russian offensive campaign, which is why they decided to solve this problem once and for all.
At first glance, it seems surprising that Russian forces were unable to push Ukrainians basically back into the river. However, if we look at the topographic map, we can see that the Ukrainian bank of the river is significantly higher than the Russian bank. The average difference in elevation is around 50 meters. Such a strong position allows Ukrainians to control the vast ground in front of them and help the marines to hold the bridgehead. In fact, Russian soldiers report that they are very often suffering from Ukrainian tank fire from the other bank when they try to attack Krynky.
The inability of the Russian forces to hold the eastern bank of the river has been a point of concern for every Russian military analyst, without exception, and the Russian commanders responsible for this region continuously endured harsh criticisms. During his annual forum, Vladimir Putin tried to address and downplay the situation by saying that he personally ordered the High Command to create this trap and allow Ukrainians to enter it. He added that this was a great success because Ukrainians lost dozens of soldiers, while Russians only had several men wounded.
Such an out-of-touch comment discredited everything he said before because even judging by the publicly available footage, the verified Russian losses of heavy equipment are already at around 150 pieces, while the losses in personnel are in the thousands. By the way, 150 pieces of heavy equipment is almost as many as Russians lost in Avdiivka, which confirms that Ukrainian operations are undermining Russian offensive capabilities tremendously.
Over the last 10 days, Madiar has also released a lot of combat footage showing how they have been destroying one Russian assault unit after another. The most valuable target over the last day became yet another heavy thermobaric artillery system TOS-1. Ukrainian fighters from the 35th Marine Brigade also have a drone detachment that works with marines even closer. The videos show how they destroyed multiple tanks and armored fighting vehicles. The manines from the 36th, 37th, and 38th Brigades are also active in the region and showed several videos with the destruction of 2 tanks and 2 armored fighting vehicles. Other detachments are more focused on the Russian rear and counterbattery fire and destroyed multiple Russian Grads, Uragans, Giatsynts, D-20 howitzers, as well as ammunition depots, personnel concentrations, and other equipment.
Overall, the fighting in Krynky is extremely tough, and the Russian attacks here are as intense as in other hot spots. Nonetheless, Ukrainians are successfully leveraging the high ground to provide the fire support necessary for the marines that are operating in Krynky. The surge in intensity means that Russians are not comfortable with the Ukrainian bridgehead and try to eliminate it by any means. However, as you saw from the combat footage, so far, it only led to high losses and benefited Ukrainians. The fact that Russians are constantly reinforcing this area and losing their forces means that they cannot use them for their offensives in the east, alleviating the pressure on the Ukrainian defenses and undermining Russian plans.

A brief summary of the day.
First. We continue our new tradition of honoring the Heroes of Ukraine. Everyone who has been awarded this title must receive an apartment from the state. We started this tradition on Ukraine’s Armed Forces Day and continued it today. I had the honor to hand over the Gold Star Orders to the families of the Heroes who were awarded posthumously. I also handed over certificates for apartments – another 20 families of our Heroes received housing. Soldiers, sailors, sergeants, officers. Others – every Hero of Ukraine – will receive the same. In total, 362 people have been awarded this title since the beginning of the full-scale war and up to now. These are warriors of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the National Police, the Main Intelligence Directorate, the Security Service of Ukraine and other elements of the Defense and Security Forces.
Second for today. I had a rather extensive and substantive meeting with government officials regarding our work with the European Union to ensure that financial support for Ukraine continues at a sufficient level for the next four years. The Prime Minister, the First Deputy Prime Minister, and ministers were present. We discussed the details and specific decisions needed. We are working as actively as possible to guarantee stability for our country and resilience in all its institutions, in all systems and functions of the state. And this will be achieved.
I am grateful to everyone who helps. I am grateful to everyone who makes the protection of our national interests not only fair, but also thoroughly elaborated.
An important international conversation took place with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres. The focus was on security, particularly maritime security in the Black Sea, including the expansion of this security, and therefore the strengthening of global food security. And the approach of the moment when we can restore security to all our people – when we can end the Russian aggression. End it in a fair manner. I have invited a representative of the United Nations to a new meeting of advisers on the implementation of the Peace Formula. This meeting, which we are currently preparing, will be the fourth of its kind. And gradually – step by step – we are filling the content of each of the ten points of the Peace Formula with the consent of the world majority.
Another point. Now, on the eve of Christmas, everyone in our state should remember that this time is a time for concentration, a time for work, a time to be able to relax afterwards. Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and every other region of ours, where the fate of the state is currently being decided. By our warriors, by all our people. Maximum attention to defense. Maximum efforts for the sake of the state. Maximum energy for Ukraine to be able to achieve its goals. I thank everyone who lives in this way. Who fights and works for the sake of Ukraine.

Day 666 of the russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.
The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets. With the improvement of weather conditions, the enemy has increased the intensity of the use of tactical aviation and FPV quadcopters. The adversary continues to conduct active assault operations with the support of armored vehicles. The enemy has increased the number of air strikes and artillery shelling.
During the day of December 21, there were 86 combat engagements. The enemy launched 41 air strikes, 28 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
The operational situation in the east and the south of Ukraine remains difficult.
VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Around 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Karpovychi (Chernihiv oblast), Turya, Krasnopillya (Sumy oblast), Vesele, Hatyshche, Dvorichanske (Kharkiv oblast).
KUPYANSK AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 18 attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast) and Stelmakhivka (Luhansk oblast). In that area, the enemy used air support in attempts to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the Ukrainian soldiers repelled 3 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Terny (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy, with air support, made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The invaders launched air strikes near Nevske (Luhansk oblast) and Spirne (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne (Donetsk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 7 attacks of the adversary near Bohdanivka, Klishchiyivka, and Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast). Also, the adversary launched an air strike in the vicinity of Toretsk (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, Andriyivka, Kurdyumivka (Donetsk oblast).
AVDIYIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 20 enemy attacks east of Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiyivka, and 12 more attacks in the vicinity of Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers, with air support, made failed attacks to breach Ukrainian defense in the area. The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Oleksandropil, Sukha Balka, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiyivka, Vodyane, Nevelske (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary, with air support, launched 11 unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiyivka, Maryinka, Novomykhailivka, Pobjeda were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.
SHAKHTARSKE AXIS: the enemy did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations. The adversary fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Blahodatne, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva (Donetsk oblast).
ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 5 adversary attacks west of Verbove (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the adversary made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. Around 25 settlements, including Robotyne, Novodanylivka, Orikhiv, Novoandriyivka, Mali Shcherbaky, Pyatykhatky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
ODESA operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson and the settlement of Antonivka (Kherson oblast). Also, the invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast).
The enemy did not abandon its intention to drive our units from the left bank of the Dnipro, made 11 failed assaults. The attacks were repelled and the enemy retreated having suffered major losses. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line, continuing to retain their positions and firing for effect on the enemy.
During the day of December 21, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 14 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, and 2 strikes on air defense systems of the adversary.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 1 concentration of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 1 artillery system, and 2 ammunition depots of the Russian invaders.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone call with Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.
The Head of State thanked the interlocutor for the active stance of the Netherlands regarding the opening of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. He also highlighted the importance of providing €50 billion in long-term EU assistance for Ukraine as soon as possible.
“This decision will not only contribute to bolstering our defense and macroeconomic resilience, but also demonstrate the unwavering support of the European Union and may become a driver for similar decisions by other partners of ours,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President and the Prime Minister discussed frontline developments and the situation in the Black Sea, as well as Ukraine’s current defense needs, including artillery, drones and air defense.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Dutch Council of Ministers for the decision to prepare the initial 18 F-16 fighter jets for their delivery to Ukraine. The leaders agreed to continue working on bilateral security arrangements in the framework of the G7 Vilnius Declaration.
The interlocutors also discussed the next meeting at the level of advisors to the heads of state on the implementation of the Peace Formula and efforts to further consolidate international support for the Ukrainian vision of a just peace.

A disease spread by rodents that causes vomiting and bleeding from the eyes called “mouse fever” is tearing through Russian troops fighting in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence, illustrating the poor conditions soldiers face as the war edges towards stalemate and nears the two-year mark.

“Mouse fever” is reportedly “mowing down” Russian troops “en masse” near the city of Kupyansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate (GUR) said in a Telegram post.
-Symptoms of mouse fever include a severe headache, fever, rashes, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting and bleeding from the eyes, GUR said, adding that the disease resembles flu in its early stages.
-The disease also affects the kidneys, GUR wrote, meaning infected people can experience severe pain in the lower back and have difficulty urinating.
-The disease is spread by rodents and transmitted to humans when they inhale dust from rodent excrement or eat contaminated food, the GUR said.
-GUR claimed the Russian command is ignoring complaints from its troops about illnesses like mouse fever, believing them to be an excuse to avoid combat duties.
