“I like the religious explanation better, where each item is a part of Christian faith.”
That was a later addition. The roots are in the Pagan Winter Festival (Saturnalia), (taken over as “Christmas” by the Church). Eating well was the biggest luxury in life in those days. The Church timed it’s largest “holy days” (now holidays) to match Pagan festivals.
That and the fact that the Nativity probably took place around the same time of year as the Passion.
Memorializing the birth then the death during the same month would be awkward.
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her;
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;
Well, fancy that, she swallowed a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;
What a hog to swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a goat;
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a cow;
I don't know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly – perhaps she'll die!There was an old lady who swallowed a horse...
She's dead, of course!

Yes. Is it right that the actual Nativity is thought to have come in April? Just a vague memory, might be wrong.
However...
How do you sing with all those feathers flying around?
We try not to inhale.

My wife has a small tabletop Christmas tree, with a nativity set underneath composed of heavily anthropomorphized bears.
I constructed an inert .357 mag “training round” and hung it in her little tree.
To her credit, she “got it” pretty quickly.
Ancient Hebrew thought was that a prophet died on the anniversary of his conception.

If they were all birds then wouldnt 12 drummers be grouse?
Not only do grouse sit on logs and drum like the inhabitants of the next island over from Gilligan but its well known that its the only bird capable of out performing John Bonham.
On the “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” Johnny ran the numbers and and came up with about the same. That was in the 1970s.
