Popular Granola Bars and Cereals Recalled over Potentially Fatal Contamination [Quaker Oats]

The Quaker Oats Company has recalled more than two dozen types of granola bars and cereals over concerns of a potentially fatal contamination.

The company is recalling the foods over a possible salmonella contamination risk.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and in rare cases, death.

In extreme cases, salmonella can get into the bloodstream and cause more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The various products being recalled have been sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan.

The company said it hasn’t yet had any confirmed reports of illness connected to the recall.

The company said consumers should throw out any of the affected products they find in their house.

They should then call Quaker Oats customer relations at 1-800-492-9322 or visit www.quakergranolarecall.com to request a refund.

The affected products include:

Quaker Chewy Bars in chocolate chip

Chocolate chip cookie dough

Dark chocolate chunk

Quaker Puffed Granola Apple Cinnamon

Blueberry Vanilla Cereals

Other products are also affected by the recall.

Last month, a salmonella outbreak connected to cantaloupe caused at least eight deaths in the U.S. and Canada.

Health agencies from the two countries have said “Malichita” or “Rudy” brand cantaloupes potentially served as the source of the illnesses.

At least four suppliers are believed to have distributed the fruit.

There has been a slew of recalls over the Salmonella concerns in recent weeks, including whole cantaloupes from the two brands and products believed to be made from the potentially affected fruit, according to the FDA.

Earlier this month, TGD Cuts LLC put certain fresh-cut fruit cups, clamshells, and tray products under recall, according to a notice posted by the FDA.

“...a salmonella outbreak connected to cantaloupe caused at least eight deaths in the U.S. and Canada.”

I had just bought cantaloupe chunks from Albertsons supermarket (i.e., Safeway) when this was announced. My wife made me take it back. They tried to argue that they weren’t included in the recall but I said I didn’t want to take the chance. They grudgingly gave me a refund. The weird thing is that they said to bring the food back next time. I figured that the last thing they would want is possibly contaminated food coming back into the store so I had thrown it away.

So no salmonella here.

I’ve always been curious...how could such a nasty bug be named after a FISH? A tasty fish, at that.

LOL...I didn’t see the Quaker Oats in there!

Sigh. All these years, they were telling us to eat oatmeal to reduce cholesterol. I didn’t want to do it, because I never liked oatmeal all that much.

Then, when I decided to eat oatmeal, almost as soon as I got used to it, they came out and told me I SHOULDN’T be eating oatmeal.

I have decided they can just go pound sand. I don’t listen to ‘em anymore.

I think it is more about ensuring that people actually don’t simply eat all of something before they try to use the receipt to get a credit. People have been doing that scam for years. So if you bring it back in full, they still dispose of it, but they know you didn’t eat it.

NOT, I repeat NOT the more generally used plain Quacker Oats cereal, quick or Old Fashioned versions.

Good point.

Of course they could check our purchase history and see we’ve spent a fortune there over 40 years (the “loyalty” program) and not scammed them once.

To Safeway’s credit, I got one bad egg in a dozen a couple months ago (it was gross!) and phoned their consumer hotline. The very kind, patient and helpful woman asked if I had a photo and UPS code to send them (which I did). She apologized profusely and immediately gave me credit on our account for our next purchase. She didn’t insist on seeing proof that I had destroyed the other eleven eggs, either. We DID eat the other eleven, too.

Aside from the plain oatmeal, Quaker cereals often have more sugar than even Captain Crunch or Count Chocula. Healthy indeed.

I checked, it’s only granola bars and “granola cereal”. The recall does not affect oatmeal at all

I could tell you are a very honest person, because the idea that people could consume something, then claim something for a refund didn’t really come to your mind.

I am curious about that egg!
