Another electric vehicle (EV) startup is touting “holy grail” charging technology.
The news from UK-based Nyobolt might just rise to the billing, as it promises 155 miles on a six-minute charge, with production slated to start in 2024.
Most EVs take much longer, sometimes even hours, to fully charge.
“With our unique technology we have … developed smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time,” Nyobolt CEO Sai Shivareddy told BBC Top Gear.
The Nyobolt website doesn’t go into great detail about the tech inside the battery. The makers promise high power, a long life cycle, and improved safety to go along with the extremely fast charge time.
Lithium-ion batteries, common in EVs and a lot of other technology, have, in some cases, caught fire. Battery-makers are working on better alternatives, in part to reduce the explosion risk. Nyobolt experts claim that its battery has a “wider temperature performance.”
What’s more, it plans to put the tech to the test in fast fashion. Nyobolt has teamed with the UK’s Callum Design to create a sports car. The Nyobolt EV has the curves of a vintage roadster, but there’s no doubt it’s from the 21st century. Everything on the car is as high-tech as it gets.
After watching a video showcasing the car on Callum’s website, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn the EV comes with a warp drive (maybe in the next generation).
Motor Authority reported that Nyobolt hasn’t released a production date for the sports car. But the battery tech is ready for “rapid scale-up” next year. The power pack has been tested with more than 2,000 fast-charge cycles with good performance, according to the Motor Authority report.
It’s more good news for the EV industry as it tries to match range and performance with gasoline-powered vehicles.
Nyobolt is considering plugging into the truck, bus, and luxury categories, as well, according to Motor Authority.
The sports car could be the first big test for the startup.
“Nyobolt’s technology allows this car to tick all the boxes,” Callum creative lead Aleck Jones told Top Gear.

we put stabil in our gas to increase its usable life. our generator starts first or second pull every year when needed. lawn tractor sits 6 months...same thing. in fact, everything we use only part of the year starts easily with petroleum products in them. charge any battery fully, take it off if its charger and in six months see if it still has a full charge. that is the only test necessary to know whether or not any battery is worth investing in. we haven’t found one yet outside of the small batteries we keep in the refrigerator. wondering if maybe an ev could run on D cells and how many it would take.
The EV fans claim they are just as good as gasoline.
Then every second week they hype a battery “breakthrough” that will change everything.
Sure. Now, if they hook it up to a normal, typical old house in northern Finland or the like, charge it 6 minutes on house current, run it 24 hours/day for 5 years and prove the battery has not degraded. Do the same in South Texas or Arizona or similar to demonstrate heat tolerance. Avoid burning the house or cars to the ground, then I might be impressed.
Making a battery, issuing a press release making claims, not impressed. Show me the brutal real world tests it has been run through and show me certified, repeatable results.
Yep,every gas station is effectively a power plant. The scientifically illiterate just can’t understand that. Even if you could charge at that rate the power has to come from somewhere.

18650s and other li-ion cells are smaller than D cells and there are over 8,000 in a Tesla Model X.

The faster the charge, the faster the degradation of the battery as well.

A truly fast charge, a charge comparable to filling your gas tank (less than 19 minutes) would pull a huge amount current.
We’re talking industrial levels of current.
If we were to convert all personal transportation to Battery Power, every neighborhood would have a huge bank of electric transformers and very house would have it’s own large transform sitting on a pole outside the house.
Every home would have 3 phase service.
The amount of copper needed to build all of these transformers would hollow out the earth.
The true intent of the world’s leaders is to make us give up our cars and our freedom. To put us all in tiny houses or apartments. We will all own nothing and be miserable.
Gonna need some big drop cords and a robust distribution system.

No no no no no... What you do is get a loan guarantee from DOE to buy out the original big investors including yourself. You don't go bankrupt. The follow-on investors and taxpayers do.
And what if there are a hundred of these cars recharging all at the same time.. Or, in a large city, a thousand.?? Maybe in a place like LA. TEN THOUSAND.!?! How's that going to work.??
