New medical research suggests that owning a cat could double the risk of developing schizophrenia.
To reach that conclusion, scientists in Australia analyzed 17 studies published over the last 44 years from 11 different countries, including the US and the UK.
“Our findings support an association between cat exposure and an increased risk of broadly defined schizophrenia-related disorders,” the authors wrote in their analysis, published in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin.
“We found that individuals exposed to cats had approximately twice the odds of developing schizophrenia,” wrote the research team from the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research.
Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that often runs in families, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Uh oh! I have 9 cats. I guess I’m at risk.
Note to pregnant ladies: I’d give both the litter boxes AND the CoupFlu vaxxes a wide berth...

Unlike the 1960 era, when coon hunters kept the varmints reduced ,outside cats are now prey to overpopulated raccoons, roving coyote packs, owls, and hawks. And bobcats.

Hmmmm......... interesting.
We had a few months of disappearing cats and small dogs that was attributed to coyotes. But coons?
I live in a suburban community where my property is visited at least twice every night by the resident coons. My yard is thus coon habitat. There are three stray cats that make regular forays into my yard. I think cats and coons coexist.
“individuals exposed to cats “
that’s kinda vague. covers everything from someone who passes a stray on the street to someone that has 20 cats at home
I’m a dog owner. I can’t tolerate an animal that walks through their poop and pee, then jumps onto your kitchen counters. Rush was quoted as saying “Dogs have owners. Cats have staff” or some such. He loved his cats.
I get periodic urges to go postal on liberals.
Is it my five indoor cats causing that, or do they help keep it under control?
There was also a suggested association with cat litter being found in the subject households’ dust bins and the absence of mouse droppings in the basements.
OMG, my cats would love this!! 😍
Beat me to it.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
Also, this is what you call “junk science”
Einstein and Churchill had cats.
One could have been named Schrödinger, and the other Yalta.... :)

Does cat ownership run in families? I’ve owned cats most of my life and afaik I’m not a schizo...
All my cats went outdoors do to their business. Never had a cat box. Never lived in a city or apartment.
A calming effect? LOL. You haven’t met my cat, DaisyJane, a true brat of a cat. It’s her way or the highway. Vet laughed when I took her in at six weeks old for her first visit. “She’s a tri-colored tabby, very smart and very fierce.” You betcha. She bites me when I don’t do it her way and right now. We have very loud arguments and swear at each other too. “Bitchy Kitty” . I love her madly, admire her spirit,, and she’s a great cuddle when she feels like it.
That might work here...
...at least until the coyotes show up!
