An Arizona car owner says he was shocked when he heard how much it would cost to replace a battery in his hybrid vehicle.
Lucas Turner told KPHO that he recently took his 2014 Infiniti hybrid to a dealership for a check engine light.
He said he knew something was wrong but wasn’t expecting it to be this bad.
“They told me that I need a new hybrid battery and it’s going to cost $18,000 for the battery and another $2,000 to have it installed,” Turner said.
The hybrid car owner said his vehicle has less than 70,000 miles on it and the entire car was purchased for $16,000.
“My jaw dropped with them wanting $20,000 just for a battery,” he said. “It makes no sense in my mind.”
According to Nerdwallet, the cost to replace a hybrid battery typically ranges between $1,000 and $8,000, depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that [Turner] could find a less expensive battery from another source,” said Karl Brauer, an analyst for iSeeCars.
Electric and hybrid vehicle batteries are warrantied for eight years or 100,000 miles.
According to Brauer, the batteries regularly last much longer.
“It’s not uncommon for these batteries to last 15-plus years and more than 150,000 miles,” Brauer said.

Turner’s car technically still runs, but he doesn’t know how much longer it will last without the costly repair.
“So, $20,000 or a pile of scrap metal in my driveway,” he said.
Turner said Infiniti has since offered him a 50% discount on the battery replacement while he is still deciding his next move.

Just put a little piece of duct tape over the "check engine light". Problem solved.
What does it cost to scrap a hybrid/full electric vehicle?
If a normal hybrid battery replacement is $1000 to $8000, this looks like greedflation in action.
True that. For what it’s worth it’d cost about $10K to replace the battery in my full EV (not a Tesla) if it wasn’t under warranty. A hybrid battery should be a lot less. As always do your research before buying a car or anything else you’re spending thousands of dollars on.
You can buy two fairly decent gasoline guzzlers for that much money and they’ll last you for several years each. I find it hilarious to watch delivery drivers tooling around in their Tesla or Benz delivering pizza... Seriously?
Was it under warranty [NO!]? Then don't do that.
Remove the battery and just use the engine , you may need a few hacks ,LOL
I’m curious...these stupid E-scooters, what’s the rate of battery replacement cost?
Don’t think of it as $20,000, think of it as an investment to fight Climate Change and save the Planet……. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good luck with the $1000 EV battery, suckers. It might get a person to the local grocery store before it needs another charge.
My friend, who bought a new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid last year got rearended last week.
So now he is having trouble finding a repair shop who will agree to fix it.
And, by the way, this same friend was one of the first people to get the Moderna vaxx jab and he has had major health problems since then.
Lesson to the rest: “It is not a good idea to be the first person to buy some new and untested product.”
Folks who can’t be bothered to research costs associated with the vehicle they’re looking to purchase deserve what they get.
Caveat emptor.
It’s not a good idea to let other people do your thinking for you.
I’ve met a number of people with hybrid cars who will never buy another hybrid again.
But he does get $20,000 of Virtue Signals.
Not only that, if an EV’s batteries catch fire in your garage, bye bye house. Those battery fires are almost impossible to put out.
I know the feeling, had to replace the sparkplugs last week and set me back $60.
