Grizzly Bears in Lower 48 are the Deadliest Bear Population

The grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states of the United States is the deadliest population of bears in the world. From 1975 to 2023, a population of under 2,000 grizzly bears has killed more people than all the grizzly/brown bears in Alaska.

The current population of grizzly bears in the lower 48 states has grown to about 2,000 bears from the low of about 700 to 800 bears estimated in 1975.  If the population has grown at a constant rate over the last 48 years, the rate of growth would be about 2%, and the average population over the 48 years would be about 1300 bears. Grizzly bears were declared a threatened species in 1975 under the Endangered Species Act.

In 1975, grizzly bears in the lower 48 were listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The listing required recovering the species to a self-sustaining population, and it became illegal to kill, harass or harm grizzlies except in self defense.

Legal hunting of grizzly bears ended in the lower 48 states in 1975. The bears are concentrated in three states, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, with three or four dozen divided between Idaho and Washington State in the Selkirk ecosystem, which extends into Canada. Northwest Montana had a very limited season on grizzly bears until 1991 when a federal judge stopped the hunt.

All of the fatal grizzly bear attacks in the lower 48 states since 1975 occurred in places where it was illegal to hunt grizzly bears.

The other population of grizzly/brown bears in the United States is in Alaska. The population of grizzly/brown bears in Alaska has remained stable from 1975 to the present.

An average of 4% of the grizzly bears in the United States account for 56% of the human fatalities.

It is difficult to know how many human bear contacts there are in Alaska and in the lower 48 states. Bears tend to like places humans like.

Add in the fatalities from feral human attacks, and then consider the numbers!

Not surprising.
When we have moronic woke flatlanders walking up and trying to pat a Bison, one can only imagine what they do when they see a cute little grizzly bear cub. /s

Where’s Captain Obvious when you need him?

He was attacked by a cougar, mauled by a wolf , choked on a spotted owl and finally ate by a grizzley in an econatzi’s endangered species reserve that used to be private property before being taken by eminant domain.

To thunderouse cheers of
“ save muver earth” secular humanist commie pagans.

No kidding.

I’d rather live around the grizzlies. You can predict their behavior, and they will make a lot of noise getting into your house—which would be rare. Plus most of the time you can avoid them or entice them with food to be distracted

The main reason is they don’t carry glocks illegally modified to be fully automatic with legal parts sold on eBay.

I do remember they were down to 800. The same report suggested they were most populous in the LA area meaning the preferred places that people found popular.

Too bad Cocaine Bear doesn’t live on our Southern border.

More people visiting parks

and despite all the warnings, you still see people try to get close to the bears to "get that perfect camera shot"

I've seen that way too many times in Banff NP and Kananaskis (both loaded with bears)

Not surprised at all. Where I live (across the border from the Lower 48), Black Bears are the biggest wildlife-related threat to campers just two hours’ drive to the north of the city. Mean bastards!

A high school friend of mine had access to his parents’ vacant 30-acre lot somewhere east of Parry Sound, ON. He and a mutual friend learned the hard way that the only clear ground was the worst place to pitch their tent; it was used by the Black Bears for access to the lake. They spent the rest of the night sleeping in their car.

What’s that famous quote about the limitlessness of human stupidity? I think about that every time I see a picture of an idiot cozying up to an enormous wild animal, especially one that considers them a food source. I’m sure some of these geniuses would jump at the chance to “swim with the crocs” or “ swim the Great Whites”.

Are you referring to the one from Albert Einsten? It certainly applies to this topic. Google is my friend:

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”
