Key Lime Pie is the best, but not all are authentic. My husband grew up in Key West and drove me up and down the Keys trying every restaurant for the good stuff. Only one had it. No whipped cream, nothing but filling made of real key limes, which are different from the others, and a certain crust.

Trader Joe has it in the season. I go there all the time and kids who work there greet me when I walk in with “No it hasn’t come in yet, Barbara”. Or “How many did you buy?.”

Thanks for the explanation on chicken and waffles -- that does straighten out the confusion!

I've got a full English planned for my wife for Christmas eve morning (she just doesn't know it yet). I'm paying her back for learning how to make a great toad in the hole (one of my favorites) and for locating haggis for me (minus the lights of course, but close enough for me). lol

Now boiled chicken is something I never heard of in the context of English food! I've had it but typically just as a way of stretching the poor fowl out longer. What's the English version? It something like their poached chicken?

I always heard that some of that stuff called cheese product was only one molecule apart from plastic. If true, that can’t be good for you.

You speak truth. I’ve made that so much I don’t even need a recipe for it... can eye-ball it close enough. I would submit that black pepper is REQUIRED though.

“I would submit that black pepper is REQUIRED though.”

Fresh cracked, of course.

Best,

I don’t trust some pre-ground spices... period. I even do salt in a grinder.

So, naturally... :-)

Salt should be Kosher and kept in a salt pig.

Yea, I know.

I am going to have to add oysters Rockefeller to the list. In fact, I just finished off some nice homemade ones and can attest to their goodness.

My favorite, oyster Rockefeller. In fact, I made 3 1/2 dozen as appetizers for Thanksgiving.

Chicken and waffles are (sort of) soul food that has it's roots in New York City. (We will now pause for the cows to conclude their chorus of "New York City?")

It comes from the early 1900s when a lot of black musicians were playing jazz in the clubs. When the club closed at about four in the morning you went to eat at the only places that were open, the diners. Where you could get left over fried chicken and they would have made the batter for the breakfast waffles they would soon be serving to the breakfast crowd.

It was the fastest and cheapest food on the menu.

And it is also tasty.

Lots of Americans could make better food choices - but at least we’re not like the corrupt thugs, goons and scum in DC selling out their country.

Yes the boiled chicken is also called poached chicken. I wish I knew which seasonings my grandmother used when she made it.

Your wife will love the English breakfast. That’s really nice. I’ve never had haggis but would definitely try it.

My grandma also made what she called chilli sauce, which was more like a chutney. I’ve been able to replicate that. I put it in my garbage plate meat sauce. Makes it taste just right.

I came here to defend circus peanuts too. Been using them like that for years.

I know this a stupid question to ask, but can one find a good pastrami sandwich in modern day Israel?

Ping to this query, Jewbacca!

Hope all is well with you, J. A blessed Hannukah!

Times have changed where when I grew up there was still regional food. As a northerner, never had good bbq, grits, and especially biscuits and gravy. I went nuts over them the first time I ate them and eat them today.
