The former President finally addressed the Seminoles' playoff exclusion Monday.
Former President Donald Trump is blaming a familiar foe for the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles not making the College Football Playoffs — his chief political rival and fellow Florida man, Gov. Ron DeSantis.
In a post to Truth Social, Trump said “Florida State was treated very badly by the ‘Committee.'”
“They become the first Power Five team to be left out of the College Football Playoffs. Really bad lobbying effort…Lets blame DeSanctimonious!!!”
The dig is especially brutal considering outrage over FSU’s perceived snub after the team failed to make the playoffs despite a perfect season. Fans, and even those who don’t fear the spear have taken to social media since the decision over the weekend to decry FSU’s omission even as two teams without a perfect record made the cut. DeSantis was among the perturbed.
Posting to X on Sunday, DeSantis said “what we learned today is that you can go undefeated and win your conference championship game, but the College Football Playoff committee will ignore these results.” Interestingly, DeSantis has talked about Florida State football at various points during this campaign.
During a speech to a group in Prosperity, South Carolina, Ron DeSantis extolled the current performance of the Seminoles, framing it as a welcome change from years of mediocrity from the Sunshine State’s gridiron programs.
“Clemson has won in football recently. Florida, our state, has struggled in college football recently,” DeSantis complained.
“We were the top state for years and years. We’ve not had anybody compete even to make the playoff until this year,” DeSantis added, forgetting FSU’s loss in the CFB Playoffs after the 2014 season.
DeSantis has given variations of this speech before, lauding the Seminoles’ performance and excoriating years of lackluster seasons among the state’s programs before that, and forgetting that FSU made the playoff previously. “We’ve actually never had a team in the college football playoff since the playoffs started. Fast forward, rewind, when I was growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, it was like a Florida team was competing for the national title almost every year,” DeSantis recounted during an interview Wednesday on WFEA’s Morning Update.
The Governor, who played Division 1 baseball at Yale, griped early in his administration about students leaving the state to play college football elsewhere.
“I realized this my first year as Governor. I asked my staff to give me letters of congratulations for all Florida’s high school blue-chip football recruits because we’ve got great high school football in Florida. And I’m signing these letters and it’s like, ‘Dear Michael, congratulations on going to the University of Georgia. Congratulations on going to Alabama.’ And I’m like, why congratulate them for leaving our state?” DeSantis said to a crowd in Georgia this summer.
“That didn’t used to be what it was.”

I agree with Donald!
The only thing you can blame desanctomonious for is not doing the job he was elected to do.
DT-What a total jackass!!! A child in temperament!
Is Trump now a political clown like Liz Cheney?
DeSantis ... livin’ rent free in yer head.
Schedules matter. As a Gator fan it was a fantastic weekend!!
As opposed to Trump, who totally drained the swamp by filling his administration full of swamp creatures?
DeSantis must’ve wanted a better playoff!
Imagine Clemson going 13-0 in the ACC and being left out of the playoffs. It would NEVER happen!
I am not an FSU fan, but they got badly disrespected. I would have left out both Texas AND Alabama.
My 4 picks would have been Michigan, Washington, Florida State and Georgia (even though they lost the SEC championship).
I love Trump, and pray that he wins it all in 2024, but this childish infighting hurts The Cause.
Save it for the other side, PDJT.
Trump’s policies were excellent, as was the way he dealt with foreign leaders. That said, he says some really stupid stuff. In many ways he is his own worst enemy, which is really sad because he did a LOT of good for this country.
Losing QB Travis was what kept FSU from the CFP.
Not sure about the 2nd and 3rd stringers they were forced to use.
Rather see a team left out of the CFP than be embarrassed like TCU was last year.
Yup, Texas and Bama bring big bucks to the table. More so than FSU or Georgia
Trump never misses an opportunity to be a jackass.
He was elected governor in January, 2023 then hit the campaign/book signing trail, spending the last 7 months in Iowa. Trump has a case.
I’m a Georgia fan, and I would say they should not be in. If there are only four teams in the playoffs and you aren’t your conference champion, then you have no business in the playoffs.
True that. Normally FSU's regular schedule would be solid. But this year Clemson and Florida weren't even on the CFP rankings at the end of the regular season: https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings/_/week/14/year/2023/seasontype/2. (Yup, I'm poking fun at the Gators. LOL)
Only 2 teams that unbeaten FSU played were good enough to be in the final rankings. Same with unbeaten Michigan. Same with unbeate Washington (though they played one big team twice: Oregon). That's why they were unbeaten.
Georgia, however, played 3 of those big teams, which is why they lost one (only by 3 points). IMHO Georgia is better than the unbeatens. Texas played 4 of those big teams (losing only 1 to Oklahoma). Bama played 5 of those big teams -- FIVE!! That's why Bama had a loss (to Texas) but FSU and Michigan are unbeaten -- Bama played more of the big boys than anybody else.
