Winnipegger Chad Allan, from the band Guess Who has died at the age of 80.
He was a founding member and original lead singer of the band, recording three albums before leaving it in 1966.
Allan has been identified as one of Canada’s music pioneers and was given the Order of Manitoba in 2015 for his contributions to the Canadian music industry.
Allan passed away on November 21 leaving behind his beloved wife Christine, who he had been with since 1993.
His obituary describes him as a “kind and humble man (who) will be forever missed by his family and friends.”
He played guitar, piano, and accordion. He continued to perform until he had a stroke in 2017.
He had more important things to do
Than spend his time growin’ old with you

No sugar tonight in my coffee.
I’m 75 an’ I’m seein’ more n’ more folks go.
He was a founding member of the group but left in 1966 before the addition of Burton Cummings and the groups string of well-known hits in the late 60’s and early 70’s. May he rest in peace.
I was just three years old in 1966. They first came to my attention via radio after 1969.
I was a dependent in Subic Bay when I remember hearing them. Sure brings back memories!
It was music very evocative of those times.
Come On, Linda--Chad Allen (1962)
That was back in the days when we all knew what an ‘American Woman’ was ...
The original drummer (IIRC) is still playing with the band
Garry Peterson is 78
Met him earlier this year
He was also in Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Allen was the lead singer on “Shakin’ All Over”. Guess Who’s first hit. Rush frequently used the song in his bumper rotation.
Holy Crap! I just went to find some Guess Who to listen to, and heard...
“Bus Rider”!
I don’t think I have heard that song in fifty years!
I read that Cummings wrote the lyrics to American Woman. He supposedly later said it wasn’t political. Really? Rip on the ‘war machine’, ‘don’t need your ghetto to feed’.
Liar. Did he write any songs ripping any leftist run nations?
I remember as a teenager, listening to the tractor radio in the field, and changing the station when AW was on. That song made me want to slug him in the nose. I had friends with brothers in VN, and my mother’s best friend lost only son there about 2 months after AW had started to be played.... over and over.
She’s comr undone was one of my favorites by Guess Who.
It has that light, jazzy cadence that was commonly heard back then. Jazz with melody used to be a part of mainstream music, far more than it is now.
Originally Chad Allen and the Expressions...this was a few years down the road...
RIP
A few months ago in Sunday School we talked about the famous Guess Who song about Jesus and the woman at the well.
Samaritan Woman!!
Some things are easier to remember if you put them with a catchy tune.
A short walk in Vancouver would be reminiscent of a ghetto.
Great music and songs. Beats the crap of today by many miles.
The Who's Live at Leeds cover blows it away.
