Data is always handy for measuring where things are and will be, and the federal government’s energy statistics are painting an ugly picture of the present and future when it comes the loud push to electrify all of our useful, well-functioning appliances.
The sad part is the policies behind those misguided effortsare already costing Americans and forcing those in poverty or on fixed incomes to make choices between heating their homes or having enough food in the coming winter. That unacceptable situation comes in a winter fraught with the increasingly real risk of blackouts in the dead of the 2023-24 winter for 50% of the country.
The annual Consumer Energy Alliance winter energy costs analysis finds that Americans would have paid $137.4 billion more for their home heating and energy bills this winter if plans to mandate the use of electricity only for heating, cooling and cooking had been in place. Thankfully, those efforts have so far failed at the federal level and families that have energy options, including the use of natural gas, will benefit by saving an estimated 21% this winter.
The $137.4 billion figure comes from residential energy cost data the Department of Energy is legally required to update every year, and slipped out the back door with a Federal Register item in August.
This DOE report shows a stunning 32% average price increase, ranging from 16% to 55%, since 2021 for electricity, natural gas, heating oil, propane and kerosene. This is certainly nothing to brag about, and politically risky. If there is a better example of how the current Administration’s existing and proposed energy policies are costing Americans – taxpayers and voters alike – I can’t think of it...

In October, I paid $421 for 100 gallons of propane. Couldn’t afford the usual 200 gallons to completely fill our 320 gallon tank.
So we aren’t going to have a Hallmark style White Christmas with beautiful, lightly falling snow?
That lovely new dual fuel generator in our garage makes me feel a whole lot better.
Ouch.
Global warming will make sure it is a nice toasty winter. So nobody will have problems if they lose power for heating. It is no longer needed.

My wife pays in advance for the whole year. Saves a bunch, guaranteed a fixed price. Regular deliveries.
Installed it myself, although being a former HVAC guy, it was not hard for me.
Pre-buy was 1.69 a gallon. We couldn’t afford the 2000 gallons we normally buy so we “locked in” for a 75 dollar fee at 1.79 a gallon
Still not sure how we are going to pay for it. Bidenomics is killing my business. Still plenty of traffic just no one with money or decent credit to buy a car.
I am just thankful I own everything on my lot. A floor plan company would have put me out of business by now with their monthly fees.

And you might well have saved money over time if you could have filled it. That’s called the “extra cost of limited funds”. Many things in life are more expensive when you have to buy small amounts rather than in bulk due to limited cash flow.
Happens a lot with gasoline and food. Another example is not being able to maintain a vehicle leading to expensive repairs and the old “it will cost more to fix than it’s worth” problem.
Deprived leading to depraved.
Dealing with more of that now than I ever have at our car lot/shop.

Not always. Many gas furnaces have electric blowers. Good idea to have a generator, one or two radiators, and (preferably) a fireplace with ample wood pile. Doesn’t hurt to also have extra propane for gas grill if needed for cooking.

I have a friend who does a “buy here, pay here” lot, so much fun (not). It’s such a gamble, spend $2k on repairs and then the motor blows or some such.

I installed my own small Generac (16kw) but have never had to use it. My solar with battery backup has always been more than I needed.
Todays energy prices make my decision to go solar seem pretty wise now but back when I did it some people thought I was nuts.
If a bank won’t write the loan. Why should I?
They always want something that loves maintance or is known for failures too.
Something they will never do. They stop paying when it stops running.
