Weekly Garden Thread - Nov. 25- Dec. 1, 2023 [The Ultimate Christmas Tree Guide Edition]
| November 25, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 11/25/2023 7:29:19 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Yes, it is the new hybrids. I hesitated to say that here because of many’s affection for heirlooms.

I'm coming around to hybrids but will always grow some heirlooms, if for no other reason than the entertainment. My heirloom mater plants did some wild things this year. Main stem splitting off into 4-5 stems. Suckers coming out of the main stalk but not in conjunction with an existing branch. Plants deciding to start a second main stem out of the root ball months into things.

Once I get focused on something, I really get focused on it. Been thinking about putting up Christmas lights, just so I can control them with an automation controller. I’ve got 15 relays for turning things on/off. Never been big on flashing Christmas lights but I might be able to come up with some neat effects using timing.

Hi, my name’s John and I’m an addict.

“Yet another Pollard case of; See? This is why we can’t have nice things.”

LOL!

My main reason are Boyd and Eva, the CATS!

If it was a White Pine, then yes they DO pray them with a green food coloring as those turn yellow-ish in the Fall. Florida might have some law that makes tree growers spray them with some sort of fire retardant, and that might be where his allergy lies.

I know I’m going on and on about Christmas Trees today, but I have a small table-top FAKE one that has fiber optic lights. You can’t get any more ‘commercial’ and ‘obscene’ than that, LOL!

In my defense, I have a HUGE and GORGEOUS Fontanini Creche that my Uncle gifted me, so it all balances out. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! ;)

Our last maple with leaves - it's a beautiful tree - the ground is covered with "gold". The last leaves won't be down until Christmas. All the other maples (8 of them) have red leaves & are already bare. I have raked up the leaves for the new compost pile.

You’re one of a kind, alright!

Some are way more fixated, which is why we do all have nice things. Maters and chickens weren't any good as food once upon a time. Electricity is nice this time of year. I like my truck.

Motion detectors. As people drive by, things light up in succession. Maybe next year.

Then again, maybe as they drive by, lights go out. Might help prevent visitors.

It just occurred to me that since my truck’s tied up with being a crane, I’ll have to get concrete with the little car. Gonna have to put something in the trunk first to set the bags of concrete on top of so I don’t kill my back getting them out. I don’t want to build a crane again.

We always got Frasier firs. The needles are soft and fragrant and a nice green color. However we were at a friends many years ago and they had a blue spruce. The needles are wicked but there is great space and openness for hanging ornaments. We have our wreath up. Added some fake red berries from the dollar store. I cut yew branches. Soft to work with and a nice flat green look. Many years ago we spent a lot on a premade wreath and I saved the wire frame. Nothing easier to use. As far as trees we have not put one up for maybe 8 or 9 years. We did learn long ago that a tree cut earlier will have sap and last longer. The ones we cut ourselves at a tree farm , well the sap is all down and the trees lasted maybe a week before they started dropping needles. 0-02-01-c83d2dc97a103362018cb3d8db4d0227eb3939574f69a4e6afaeb762848ef3de-751ba221bab2337c The wire frame is probably 16 or 18 inches and looked like this probably when first used. Heavy wire. I can't bend it. But once it is bent and you pull out the old greens it is so easy to slide in new branches and just go around in a spiral. No hassle. s-l1600

I’m allergic to the mold that grows on evergreens. I got sick at Christmas every year as a kid. It took till I was an adult getting allergy tests for other stuff that the tests showed me why I was sick so regularly. I had to get allergy shots for several years. Now, even though the shots are wearing out some, I can take OTC meds to control it. I am still sensitive at Christmas. We have been doing a fake tree for the last 10-15 years. I do miss the scent of evergreens though. That’s what candles are good for, I guess.

“I had to get allergy shots for several years.”

Santa: ‘What do YOU want for Christmas, Little Girl?’

Little Girl: ‘Allergy shots.’ :(

That’s a drag. And I know what you mean about the scent of ‘Christmas’ in the house. I either make up one of those simmering pots-o-stuff on the stove, or I’m a big fan of the wax melts.

Beau does NOT like lit candles in the house, and I totally get that. They make so many nice ‘fakes’ now that no one needs to burn down their house just for the ‘ambiance.’ ;)

Re: moving garden hoses to gardens

I hear ya. We had a drought this year (Wisconsin) and I got tired of pulling long stretches of regular garden hoses everyday.

Anywho.....here is what makes it easier. I now have all my hoses of this brand, with the old type hoses stored for watering farther away newer evergreens a few times a year....The Zero G hose.

Got mine at Farm-n-Fleet.

Mom! Don’t be giving away the Tricks of the Trade, LOL!

I make all my own ‘holiday decor,’ too.

Having sold HUNDREDS of Christmas Trees at the Garden Center, as well as MILES of roping, and getting ‘Bow Claw’ (as we called it) after making 100,000 BOWS for wreaths and such, selling 300 miles of evergreen roping each season and making up a few hundred ‘Porch Pots’ out of leftover Christmas Tree trimmings, I am MORE than happy to take whatever shortcuts I can these days! :)

I agree, the scented candles are even stronger when lit. I leave them unmelted or unlit. It’s enough.

The allergy shots wish made me chuckle. If only we had known that was the cause! Only I have no doubt my parents would’ve just told me to toughen up EVEN IF they had known. No money for frivolity. I was lucky to get an orange in my stocking, and underwear and socks, lots of years.

I need to start cooking stew, soup, beans n meat. (makes the home smell good)

For work, the vending machine or convenient store foods are too pricey. Because I work full time, I don’t have time for 3-5 course meals so a big pot of whatever is the ticket and what I’ll be getting into this Winter. Autistic son is just going to have to get over a bunch of of ingredients all mixed together.

I'm open for recipes with minimal ingredients.

Finally fired up the wood stove. Such nice heat.
