My wife does a lot of volunteer work at our local no-kill animal shelter. A 12 year old kitty was dropped off last week. The owner just went into hospice at age 99 and nobody in the family wanted her poor kitty. That means she got the kitty at age 77 which was another bad decision.

I’m sure she loved her kitty and got a lot of comfort from the kitty (my wife says it’s a very nice kitty, but 17 pounds! One pound shy of our dog!), but the poor kitty is now all alone in the shelter. My wife pets and comforts the orphaned animals when she works there — that’s a tough job.

“To people like that, higher prices automatically denote greater value (and status) than lower-priced services.”

Exactly right. And it’s not just prices (but that is common). I remember the story in marketing class long ago about a company that made a vacuum cleaner TOO quiet and it would not sell. The customers thought it had no suction or cleaning power. So they put the noise back and it became a top seller. LOL.

Same with cars. Is the $160,000 car four times better than the $40,000 car?

I got my 6-week old kitten from a huge animal rescue place up on a nearby hill. They rescue everyone including hogs, dogs, goats, horses, etc. I had to sign papers saying she would be returned to them if anything happened to me. Friend of mine agreed to take Daisy Cat if necessary, to the same place.

My friend’s cat lived 22 years. Big black girl named Gabby was all over the neighborhood and everyone loved her.

My Mom got two full sized dogs when she was 84. I ended up training them. I insisted that a pet door be installed, which helped the dogs' quality of life immensely. They were nice dogs. The dogs loved my Mother, and she loved them. But my Mom was incapable of being in charge of two full size dogs. Luckily, they were only six years old when my Mom died, so it was easy to find them new homes.

I have always wondered if there was a way you could "loan" old people pets. The pets stay with the old person during certain hours and then they go home the rest of the day. Think of "reverse pet sitting." Someone told me that "reverse pet sitting" would confuse the dogs (two owners and two sets of rules). But my Mom's dogs knew what they could do around my Mom and what they could do around me. Like a child, they figured out who to go to for certain things: want human food- go to mom, want to walk- go to son.

We recently lost our 14 yr old yorkie which we got when we were in our late 60s.
We worried about what would happen to her if we didn’t outlive her, but our kids promised that she would have a home.
But, she became so attached to us, and us to her that I don’t think she would have survived rehoming.
The last 10 years we considered taking several nice trips, but didn’t because the separation would have stressed our sweet pup too much.
We miss her, but would never consider another pet at our age .
We recently purchased a floor care robot that vacuums and mops.
We call it our pet and I’m sure it won’t miss us when we are gone.

It would be a blessing if your wife brought the cat home. Even if the cat lives for three months.

There are a half dozen dogs, cats, puppies, and kitties she wants to bring home every single day. Thank goodness we haven’t expanded our pet family of one.

Earlier this year, our 18 year old cat became incontinent and was losing a lot of weight, so we very reluctantly had to put her down. She was a real mellow, friendly tortie. My wife and middle daughter picked her up on their annual Christmas visit to San Francisco’s Union Square back when it was a great, nice get-away treat. One of the department stores always hosted the animal shelter with a Christmas display in the window to get animals adopted.

It’s a no-kill shelter and all the animals get adopted. My wife told a friend about the kitty and the friend went to see the kitty.

My wife has duties at the shelter, but spends a lot of time comforting the animals.

"They don’t charge that much in Vegas..........................."

Probably not in NYC's notorious "Sweetheart Market" of illegal alien entrepreneurs, either.

Boy, did you nail it. All I can say is that I haven’t yet received the medical bills for the reconstructive surgery following the ER visit. It was totally my fault doing what you said. I look back and can’t believe how provocatively dumb I was.

Read recently about a cowboy from California who became fast friends with Queen Elizabeth while helping her train horses https://archive.is/hOBKL

What a wonderful story. She was one of a kind. A very few individuals stand out in history like she did. I'm glad to have lived to witness reports of her; and also to have met Dwight D. Eisenhower, and to have heard Pavarotti in live performance, twice.
