Fever and rash are common after a vaccination shot, and still, parents are pushed to stick to a brutal vaccination schedule for their little ones. Back when I had babies, the schedule was 15-16 shots by age two. Some of those shots were combos, such as DTaP, and given every few months. I was criticized for slowing down the schedule. Then, after some confusion with their vaccination records at the doctor’s office, I finally put the brakes on, even though the doctor yelled at me in front of my children. Sadly, most doctors and other people shrug off the cases of children harmed or worse by shots.

But selfish parents would rather see their kids get polio, scarlet fever, legionnaires disease and a bunch have made a comeback because parents refused vaccinations.

Until the recent influx of polio from Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. The few cases of polio there were in the U.S. came from the vaccine itself (either a bad reaction to the weakened-virus version) or from a bad batch of vaccine. People used to get innoculated aginst smallpox, but because the disease was wiped out in the U.S., it is no longer necessary. There are no vaccines for Legionnaire's Disease or Scarlet Fever, though there are effective treatments.

You don't have to be all-pro-vax or all-anti-vax. I have yet to meet ANYone who is against the rabies vaccine (which thankfully can be taken AFTER an animal encounter, but before too much time has passed). Few are against Tetanus shots. On the other hand, there are a variety of reasons to decline the MMR, HPV andf Hepatitus B, especially for infants. Shots for Varicella (Chicken Pox) are less compelling, and can be problematic as getting the actual illness is usually mild in youngsters and immunity lasts very long, whereas the vaccination tends to wear off around college age, when the consequences are more serious.

In any event, those who believe in the vaccines are free to ghet them. If they are truly effective, there is no reason to be concerned about the "free-riders", except for VERY young children.

That’s what I did with my kids. Made them do separate shots. But now they can’t do that because most all of what they have are combined shots (e.g., MM&R is one shot).
