A grandad who became an online meme after eating half a tub of paint he thought was yoghurt has died.

Bobby, also known as ‘Paint-Eating Grandpa’ from New York, gained fame in 2019 when his granddaugther Alex shared a picture of him eating the paint.

She later confirmed on Instagram that her granddad died peacefully in his sleep earlier this year in June.

Alex posted an emotional statement alongside a compilation of pictures and videos of him which was shared on TikTok.

The caption read: ‘Today would’ve been Bobby’s 92nd birthday.

‘For those who don’t know, he passed away peacefully in his sleep this June. And though he’s missed tremendously, he really did live a long, happy, healthy & fulfilling life as a doctor, musician, father, and grandfather.

‘He loved nothing more than to make people laugh, so having the internet as his audience go; truly meant the world to him. Huge thanks to everyone who’s supported Bobby boy over the years. I’m confident you guys will keep his legend alive.’

Tributes have also poured in from people online who paid their respects to the family following the sad news.

Ashley posted: ‘Sad, but we find solace in his memory.’

A social media user called Piigeon wrote: ‘Bobby will live in our hearts forever, that picture of him had me cackling every few years since it came out.’

Another person called Barry posted: ‘Rest in peace fly high we miss you.’

At the time of the meme Alex posted a picture of Bobby onto X, formerly known as Twitter, after he had eaten the paint.

‘Sooo my grandpa ate half a quart of paint today thinking it was yogurt,’ she posted.

She previously said: ‘When I say he loves yogurt, he LIVES for yogurt.

‘My mum buys at least 7 quarts of vanilla Danon yogurt a week.

‘My grandpa has always loved entertaining people. He doesn’t care whether people are laughing with him or at him.’

Thankfully Bobby had a stomach of iron and his insides were ‘unfazed’ by the unappetising food at the time.

Terrible headline, it makes you think he died from eating paint.

I'm glad this is the first comment. I've seen variations on this headline in several places now online, along with commenters laughing at what they thought was his cause of death. Says more about the commenters than the old man with diminished senses, methinks...

I’m sure the a-hole that wrote the headline meant to do that.

That’s exactly what I thought the story was. Otherwise, I would not have bothered to click. The fact of a 94 y/o dying would not be considered ‘newsworthy’ in and of itself.

Whatever the actual story is, if it were my Granddad having just died, I wouldn’t even allude to his misadventure of eating a whole carton of paint. I took that to mean she was having one last belly laugh at his expense.

Probably latex-based paint? I would think that would be indigestible, but also fairly non-toxic.

I had an older relative that came from a time and place where vegetables came from the earth and what meat you were eating them with was determined by what you encountered that day admitted that he was having a hard time keeping up with the modern world.

I was helping by doing the grocery shopping. One day I was told not to buy anymore of that new kind of fish sticks. Having not bought any fish, I asked which fish he might be talking about. He told me that he tried to fix them up by putting tartar sauce on them but “these damned things dont taste like fish at all” as he held up the box of Pop-tarts.

To be fair, she didn’t mention the time he put turpentine on his pancakes after they told him it was maple syrup.
