CHICAGO (AP) — Brunch dates and flag football games might be a little easier to get to this Sunday, when phones grace early-risers with an extra hour of rest before alarm clocks go off.
The downside: Next week across most of the U.S., the sun will set well before many folks step foot out of the office, leaving them to run errands or take walks in utter darkness. Come Nov. 5, daylight saving time is out and standard time is in, and will last until March 10

The only DST health effect I get is nausea from reading stupid articles like from the AP.
In the northern hemisphere, Daylight Saving Time simply moves an hour of sunlight in the morning to the evening starting in the spring, where, in theory, people can enjoy the extra hour of sunlight more in the summer evening after work. Maybe it should be called “Daylight Shifting Time.” With “Saving” I’ve always expected a little interest in return (maybe an hour and 5 minutes back in the fall).
In the fall, when the northern hemisphere starts to have fewer hours between sunrise and sunset, most of the U.S. goes back to Standard Time that lasts through the winter.
If you want to cast blame (other than at some govenment conspiracy), blame the planet Earth because there is approximately a 23 degree tilt of the Earth's axis as it orbits the Sun, which gives more daylight hours to the northern hemisphere during its summer months, and more daylight hours to the southern hemisphere when it's cold up north.
Of course, without that 23 degree tilt, life on Earth might not be possible.
Soon we’ll be calling it “War Time” again.
OK, don’t get mad.
Prior to 1883 there were over 144 local times in North America, but then the “high-tech” transportation companies (the railroads) established four time zones in the continental U.S. to make the train travel of people and the shipments of goods across all of these local time zones easier and less subject to miscommunication, reducing the chance of train collisions on shared tracks. In 1918, the Interstate Commerce Commission (which regulated railroads) was given control of the five time zones (now including Alaska). Since 1966 the Department of Transportation supervises the boundaries of the time zones as well as daylight saving time.
Counties and cities (such as those near time zone boundaries) can apply to the DOT for a change in which time zone they are in. Only states can apply to opt out of DST completely.
“Daylight saving time was a byproduct of the First World War”
I was referring to Standard Time.
Ben Franklin originally came up with daylight savings time to cut back on candle use.
The biological clocks of some people can probably adapt more easily to going on or off of DST faster than for others. Some people on transoceanic (or transcontinental) flights can adapt to the time change better than others. Army and Marine basic trainees get adjusted really fast to earlier wake-up times with the melodious greetings of their Drill Sergeant pierced their ears (at least that’s the way it was half a century ago).
Ask parents of newborn children about adjusting to changes in their biological clocks for those early morning feeding schedules.
We shouldn’t have DST but if an hour screws people up I seriously have to wonder why?
I don’t know what time it is half the time, I don’t wear a watch, don’t have a phone embedded in my azz. I’m retired so figuring out what day it is, is more of a pain.
When I was working I traveled through so many time zones constantly I just dealt with it...my internal clock works fine.
I have lived with the time changes for 66 years and like them. I like to have sunlight available when I am awake to enjoy it. Long summer evenings are my favorite. I have never noticed any physical effects from the changes. My dog is very exact on her meal and snack times, and today she was right on schedule, just as she was yesterday. I have no idea how she knows.
I saw farmers out picking corn under the lights of the western civilization miracle of electricity the other evening.
It’s not fair that we all don’t live on the Equator.
Latitude is an oppressor.
And singing a song about WWIII, with Tom Lehrer.
I thought we were going to stop this crap. Didn’t Rubio do one thing right and propose to stop the stupidity?
One could have the sun directly overhead at noon every day by living in a mobile home and traveling between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, spreading the journey out to six months going each way. It could be done in the western hemisphere.
Just pick a time and stick to it year around.
For example the cows get milked at the same time every day for best production. Cows can not read clocks but they do know when that time arrives.
My SIL is from the Phillipines & she loves the change of time, seasons etc. Said she hated 90-110 degree weather and 12 hours of day/night time.
It’s retardation of the highest level to continue with this crap.
She is not wrong.
I totally enjoy living at 44.00 N
Standard Time Zones deal with the effect of different longitudes on the time of day. If the U.S. were scrunched within two longtitudes less than 15 degrees apart, we would only need one time zone for the whole country.
Daylight Saving Time deals with the effect of different latitudes on the time of day. If the U.S. were scrunched within two latitudes less than 23 degrees from the equator, we wouldn’t need DST.
