Fall back: How daylight saving time can seriously affect your health
AP ^ | 11/3/23 | By CLAIRE SAVAGE and MELISSA PEREZ WINDER

CHICAGO (AP) — Brunch dates and flag football games might be a little easier to get to this Sunday, when phones grace early-risers with an extra hour of rest before alarm clocks go off.

The downside: Next week across most of the U.S., the sun will set well before many folks step foot out of the office, leaving them to run errands or take walks in utter darkness. Come Nov. 5, daylight saving time is out and standard time is in, and will last until March 10

I know Standard time is for the farmers,

Hardly, it is so city workers have more daylight for golf.

But seriously, it does cause global warming and racism.

As an Arizona resident, I prefer year-round standard time. In the summer, I just want the sun to go away in the evenings, and I’ll be up before sunrise anyway to take advantage of the brief relative coolness.

People in northern states may prefer Daylight Saving Time in the summer, or even year-round. That should be a matter for the individual states to decide. There is nothing in the Constitution authorizing Congress to mandate how the entire nation sets its clocks.

Daylight “savings” time was ALWAYS a prank, and should never have been seriously considered. But as for having any measurable effect on anybody’s health, that is a moot point, as the body can change its circadian rhythm over varying lengths of time, not the same for all persons, but rarely lasting more than a week to make up for an hour either way.

Being retired and living in Alaska, I could care less what time it is (only care about time when I have to go shopping for food). Your body gets messed up each day because the amount of sunlight changes so quickly.

“This doesn’t include car accidents, suicides, and missed appointments and flights..”

Suppose this morning a person had an airline fight to catch, how would the time change cause them to miss that flight?

I like my extra hour of sleep. Surprisingly, my dog went along with it too. But if I had my way, it would be standard time all the time.

Yep. The sun straight overhead at noon. As it should be.

Don’t care what the clock points at. The sun counts.

I don’t understand why so many people get so worked up over the time. I have hardly ever noticed the difference year to year and I’m 63. Some people, I think, just like to complain about anything, and this is one to stick it to the government.

I've traveled rather extensively in my day. Europe,Asia,Africa and Australia. I've crossed 12 time zones in 24 hours more times than I care to recall. Jet lag can be a real drag. It's taken me a week to fully recover from it on a few occasions.

But 1 hour? Nope,sorry...I can't believe that 1 hour can cause anything more the slightest problems for a day or two.

Crime spikes when daylight saving time ends, study finds!:

Researchers at Vivint report spike in many types of theft, citing FBI statistics

Michael Ruiz/ Fox News Published November 4, 2023

While many Americans gripe about the loss of sleep after clocks “spring forward,” the extra hour of darkness after the “fall back” can be expensive and painful, according to researchers.

Crime spikes across the United States in the weeks after daylight saving time (DST) ends and citizens turn their clocks back for the fall, according to a new study.

The findings were compiled by Vivint, a smart home company, based on FBI data recorded between 2017 and 2021.

Not only has the percentage of crimes committed after DST increased in each of those years, but the total number of crimes has risen as well.

Hooray for Standard Time! Now I can get up with the sun.

Exactly! I love this time of year. DST messes with people's circadian rhythms.

Heck no. Where I live, if we had DST in December and January, I'd be bumbling around in the pitch black until after 8 a.m.!

The northern states should have daylight savings time, the southern states can have standard time. DST is needed in the PNW.

Not everybody remembers about the time change, so they show up an hour late. In the fall you arrive an hour early and waste the hour, but in the spring you show up an hour late and miss the flight. This doesn’t happen to everybody, but it certainly happens.

Does no good to talk about it. It’s up to our dearly beloved legislators to change this. They had their chance, and for some reason they are not acting on it. Someone probably told them that the spotted turtle will go extinct if the clocks are left unchanged all year round, or that it will adversely impact POCs, women and LGBTXYZ-.

Takes me almost a full week to adjust and stay adjusted. Twice a year. I wish they would just pick one and stick with it. The older I get, the harder it is for me.

For some reason, when I travel to a different time zone, I adjust more quickly. I think it’s because my brain knows I’ve moved on the globe.

On top of it, the fall time change is always the beginning of my SAD. I think it’s because I grew up with a lot of sunlight, and here in the Midwest, the winter months are especially gray and cloudy. We’re lucky to get a 3/10 for the amount of sunlight we get.

I take extra D3 during the winter months to help with the SAD, and I have a “happy” light. It helps, but I think there may come a time when I need to get more sunshine in the winter months.

With the exception of a solitary wall clock, every timekeeping device within my home, automobile, and on my person dutifully adjusted to accommodate the time change. From wristwatches and car clocks to smartphones, clock radios, televisions, computers, and even the microwave, all were seamlessly synchronized to the corrected time.

The biannual time change, a widely publicized event, ensures that individuals have ample notice to make these adjustments. Consequently, anyone who struggles to adapt to this routine time shift should perhaps reconsider embarking on a flight, especially one that will transport them across different time zones.
