WAPPINGERS FALLS, New York (WABC) -- More than a dozen people were injured when a gas line was struck on Thursday afternoon in Wappingers Falls, causing an explosion that destroyed a home.

Officials said Central Hudson contractors were performing routine maintenance, replacing gas lines when they struck a 3/4-inch gas service line and the dig caused a fire and explosion at 4 Brick Row around 12:15 p.m.

The company cut electric and natural gas service to the immediate area at 1:30 p.m. and remained out Thursday evening.

Authorities said 10 civilians and five first responders were injured.

The civilians include eight adults and two children, while the first responders include one firefighter and four police officers.

The injuries to the first responders were not believed to be life-threatening.

Three civilians were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, including one child and two adults.

The other victims were taken to local hospitals by ambulance.

Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement that she deployed state emergency services personnel to assist in the response.

"As the situation develops, I urge all New Yorkers to follow the direction of law enforcement and other first responders working to keep the community safe," Hochul said. "I join all New Yorkers in praying for the Village of Wappingers Falls."

The building that was impacted by the explosion was a multi-family brick structure with a basement and two floors.

Officials say the gas infrastructure in some of the homes date back to the 1930s or 1940s.

They say the status of all victims being out of the rubble is still under investigation, but no deaths have been reported so far.

“Civilians?” WTAF? so firefighters and “first responders” are military now?

CITIZENS. RESIDENTS.

Man, I hate reading or hearing that.

Cops, firefighters, “first responders” are NOT more than citizens themselves, but they’re NOT “military” nor “militia.”

Which is highly problematic and undeserved.

Yeah, I've had a problem with "first responders" from day one. I remember when we were URGED to be trained in FIRST AID and maybe a few more advanced treatments in case you see an accident or something. Same thing with basic "what to do in case of a fire".

THE FIRST ONE ON THE SCENE IS A FIRST RESPONDER! Now, it's all "Leave them alone until the trained professional comes, even if they're bleeding out."

I've known a number of certified emergency medical types in my day, and a few RNs, plus a few ER nurses.

After about 2006 it began being legally dangerous for good samaritans to treat accident victims, even when they were licensed and/or certified emergency responders off duty.

There was the tragic accident where the Seattle cop hit the gal in the cross-walk. The cop was on an emergency health call with his lights on and going fast - all according to the rules. The gal was walking, then tried to run across the street when she saw the cop - but she didn’t make it.

Anyway - the other cop that was caught on the recorded radio call said stuff that I believe was mostly gallows humor. But the thing that bothered me the most was when he said “It was just a civilian....”
