Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith was hospitalized after suffering an apparent heart attack on Sunday evening, two defense officials confirmed to USNI News on Monday.
The Marine Corps did not provide additional details on the hospitalization. Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl is now performing the duties of Marine commandant, according to a statement from the service.
Heckl is the deputy commandant for combat development and integration. He is the most senior officer within Headquarters, Marine Corps, the service noted in the release. There is currently not a Senate-confirmed assistant commandant in place.

No need for one. It’s the marines. Watch Tuberville get blamed.
I wish the General well, but it’s probably a 50-percent chance of a medical discharge at this point.
That Karston Heckle guy looks like a real soldier
On Friday, Smith told reporters he was working two jobs as Marine commandant and assistant commandant of the service, as his Number 2 officer, Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney, had not been confirmed.
Hundreds of general and flag officer nominations are stalled in the Senate over Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville's hold on unanimous consent as he protests Pentagon policy that reimburses service members for out-of-state travel for reproductive healthcare, including abortions.
WHV?
Did that contribute to the heart attack? I don't really know. I do know that there are ways to definitively answer that question. They are not being used.
I wonder what the rate of heart attacks is for the 20–40-year-old people in the Marines. Did it change recently?
Do we really believe we have a military that is still physically capable of fighting a major war? Maybe we should avoid getting into one.
These questions have answers, and the answers make a lot of difference.
USMC Commandant Gen Eric Smith was born 1964 or 1965 (age 58–59). Your comment makes me wonder if you have ever been in the military?
Is that the mom that always posts here?
I am not concerned about the age of the commander. A 50-year-old suffering from a heart attack during exercise is uncommon, but it happens. It is difficult to make statistical conclusions from a sample size of one.
I am more concerned about the subordinate troops. Commanders are of very little use unless they have healthy and capable subordinates. Actual war fighting appears to require a lot of strenuous physical activity. I am skeptical that it can all be done sitting at a video game console.
If the forced mRNA treatment has made 20 to 40-year-old troops more susceptible to heart attacks when physically active, then we have a very big military problem indeed.
It is an easy question to ask, and fairly easy to prove or refute the idea with inexpensive health monitoring. The Military has all the data to answer such questions about their troops.
Has the rate of cardiac problems in Marine troops increased or changed in any significant way during the last three years?
The stricken Marine commander suggests that it is time to get a definitive answer to that question. And the answer makes a huge difference in military planning and strategies.
The politicians be damned.
