However, almost 50 years after stepping onto Sesame Street, the iconic singer-songwriter’s claims to Indigenous ancestry are being contradicted by members of her own family and an extensive CBC investigation.
Late last year, CBC received a tip that Sainte-Marie is not of Cree ancestry but, in fact, has European roots. She is the latest high-profile public figure whose ancestry story has been contradicted by genealogical documentation, including her own birth certificate, historical research and personal accounts — the latest chapter in the complex and growing debate around Indigenous identity in Canada.
Indigenous scholars like Kim TallBear, a professor of Native studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and a member of Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, say it’s unacceptable for non-Indigenous people to speak for Indigenous people and take honours set aside for them.
“It’s theft of opportunities, resources. It’s theft of our stories,” she said.

Ruh Roh!
Took 50 years?
Seriously?
Paging Elizabeth Warren. Paging Elizabeth Warren
Very talented, and plagued her whole life by alcohol and drugs. Amazing she made it past 80. Amazing.
She looks native and she came at a time when nobody would question a native-looking person claiming to be native.
I’m surprised this one honestly
Jesus
Rita Coolidge next?
“”””She looks native and she came at a time when nobody would question a native-looking person claiming to be native.””””
She threatened to sue into oblivion any family member who told the truth about her being born in the U.S. instead of in Canada to Indians, and her being white, the ones who did became afraid of her wealth and power and lawyers, especially the one that she threatened with accusing him of molesting her in a personal note slipped in with the normal legal threats from her lawyer.
It is an incredible article, you should read it, this was an elaborate con she did.
I remember her Vietnam protest days and her protest songs like MORATORIUM.
She interviewed Tony Orlando on a little show of hers and really insulted his hit song by indicating that TIE A YELLOW RIBBON was not a heavy song and he does much better and more serious work. Tony stood by TIE A YELLOW RIBBON and said he would like a lot more of those. She had Miss Trendy Set written all over her.
It’s an incredible story that will end in ignobility if proven true. She will be finished on this.
When I first read this last night, it was pretty sad.
As you note, she’s talented but burned the candle at both ends.
She’s done a lot of good bringing to the fore some of the issues that First Nations tribes and bands face in Canada. I hope that work is not dismissed out of hand because of her wrong decisions, decisions that will cost her professionally.
I don’t think anybody’s heard from her in years.
She’ll survive this, assuming she’s still performing.
She’s 82. Her professional life is over, especially considering addictions and mental health problems.
The only “first nation” in Canada was France.
To refer to unconnected bands of immigrants from Siberia as a “nation” is absurd.
She’s got her money, so she’s all good. She is at an age where she wouldn’t be going anywhere anyway.
The weird thing is that the birth certificate was there all along, and the media knew that she made all kinds of contradictory claims, as a member of different tribes and as a half-Indian sometimes, and a 100% Indian at other times.
This scam made her millions and made her famous and she planned it that way, there is also a story about liberalism and race in that.
Not surprising.
Overhyped communist.
