Oregon high school students won’t have to prove basic mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate from high school until at least 2029, the state Board of Education decided unanimously on Thursday, extending the pause on the controversial graduation requirement that began in 2020.

Oregon Eliminates Educational Standards
As a new school year begins, Oregon students are no longer required to demonstrate skills in reading, writing, and math. Until 2026, an Oregon high school diploma no longer guarantees academic achievement, but only participation in a system with undefined parameters. The legislators, school districts, and the governor supporting Senate Bill 744 saw that this “will benefit Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color”.
The state has adopted the position held by many 19th century abolitionists. When I read Fredrick Douglass’ autobiographies, one passage always stays with me. After speaking to an abolitionist audience, Douglass considered the evening a great success, because he concluded his talk believing these people were convinced, he was equally human with them.
He mentioned this as a significant event, because many strong supporters of black freedom questioned whether these people were fully human. If educators would treat minorities as individuals, they would design programs allowing opportunities for achievement commensurate with those for white students.
I remember Dr. Martin Luther King saying, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character…..little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”
To me their understanding of brotherhood and individual value proves more meaningful than any perception of racial superiority.
Neither. Hire from other states.
Funny, all the black kids I went to high school with in the 60’s, managed to pass the curriculum, regents exams, and graduate with no special assistance from the school system. Some were even in the National Honor Society.
"Yeah, boieeeeeee!"
But they had better be able to name at least 25 genders and successfully display knowledge of how to apply for welfare and food stamps.
How is going through school without learning basic skills going to “benefit Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color”?
How STUPID can you get??
The only beneficiaries are the teachers who are no longer expected to teach. OMG!
Then there’s no need for education at all. Release the kids from the public school prison already.
would you hire an Oregon Hight School graduate, having no assurance they can read, write or add 2 + 3?
These filthy educrats have no clue as to how racist they are.
They more they talk the stupider they sound
You forgot mastery of pronouns! Isn’t that the most important thing of all?
then why do they goto school???
mossel just just give-em all a piece of paper saying Diploma, that they can’t read, and cut-em loose...
A dumb population is a controllable population.
It is saying “Blacks can’t read, write or do math, so they don’t have to learn to read, write or do math.”
But Whiteys do.
If you’re trying to echo magna/summa cum laude, it should be parva/minima cum laude.
“Oregon again says students don’t need to prove mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate, citing harm to students of color.”
“So basically that’s saying that students of color are incapable of mastering reading, writing or math.”
Oregone is not by itself re these reading and math issues.
My mother was a reading teacher with a masters’ degree based on how important it was to test new students and basically assess every student on their ability to read and understand what they read via the testing not what grade they were in.
She moved to the DC area in the mid 1960’s and became a reading guidance teacher for one of the counties in Virginia outside DC.
Her employers were pleased and happy with her results until an event’s aftermath took over versus reality.
That event’s aftermath was first the killing of Martin Luther King.
There were riots after MLK was killed. My Mother was told that she could not test students for their reading levels versus their grade level. They considered that reality as racist.
She resigned and moved back to her SW home state. She started job interviews for the upcoming semester. She was told no by her former employers as they now felt that her system was racist.
A private school 50 miles away in another city/school district offered her a great job. She taught reading with her skills for 5+ years and retired as the same BS was starting there.
She retired and became a private reading teacher. She taught one on one or to small classes until she was in her 70’s and retired.
Later, she predicted that nationwide most students would not be able to read nor write and do simple math.
Koz dey tu stoopid tu weed
(And "Kangs" don't need to do that racist educational stuf.)
Apparently, the state of Oregon needs more burger flippers.
