Oct. 19 (UPI) -- An Oregon animal sanctuary said a Holstein steer named Romeo might be the tallest in the world at 6 feet and 3 inches tall.

The Welcome Home Animal Sanctuary in Creswell said they decided to seek a Guinness World Records title for Romeo after hearing about the current record-holder, a 6-foot, 1-inch Massachusetts steer named Tommy.

Misty Moore, founder and operator of the sanctuary, said 6-year-old Romeo has lived at the facility since he was rescued from a veal crate at a dairy at the age of 10 days old.

"He was rescued from a lady who went to a dairy and she saw all the calves from the crates and was able to secure the release of five of them," Moore told KEZI-TV. "And once she got them from that dairy, she contacted the sanctuary and we were able to take Romeo and Milo."

Moore said the sanctuary is in the process of getting Romeo officially recognized as the world's tallest steer.

Veal and lamb aren’t raised the same. Sheep run around in fields.

All of our modern cows are descended from the extinct Aurochs. It stood at 71 inches at the shoulder. Each horn was about 31 inches long.

The oldest bones discovered of the aurochs date back to the Holstein Interglacial, LOL.

Cut a lot of baby pigs, snipped ears too

Not my favorite thing to do

Clamped hogs and cut tusks.

Ahhh. Life on the farm. Educational, to say the least

Not just the castration. that is common enough, but they deliberately raise them in pens where they are killed for veal when they are just a few months old.

Not only do they restrain them from barely moving (think of a baby calf normally frolicking in a meadow), they feed them an iron-poor diet for pale meat. The babies get chronic diarrhea for their short lives. It is cruel beyond belief. I don't eat any sort of red meat.

Does whoever decided that this was the calf they wanted to castrate win a Darwin Award?

I remember back in the 60’s my uncle had these tan “o rings” that were really thick and a little less than an inch in diameter (IIRC). I asked him what they were for. That’s when I learned how the castrate bulls.

He said they put it on with special “pliars” and then the balls eventually just fall off.

In my meat cutter days we cut some veal that was milk feed veal. Mostly bone in veal chops and top round butterflied for veal cutlet. I never heard of the feeding process you described. I know they do something like that in Japan.

That how we did it too

I was 12 when I was raising my first 42 head of 3-day olds

Lot of work, but made enough to put in the bank for my first car. A 327 Camaro that I washed and waxed for 6 months before I got my license

" 6-foot, 3-inch steer at Oregon rescue might be world's tallest"

Except it isn't.

The Guinness Book already documented a Chianina steer that was 6-foot-7 and 3,750 lbs.

https://italiantribune.com/the-largest-steers-in-the-world/

Which stands to reason because the Chianina long has been acknowledged as the largest breed of cattle in the world.

The name "Chianina" tell you it came from the same region of Italy as "Chianti" wine. When you order "Bistecca alla fiorentina" in an Italian restaurant, you're getting Chianina beef. It's not Wagyu bit it's pretty good stuff.

‘Romeo.’ Love that!

Our ‘Chuck’ will be coming off pasture, soon. The Heifers he’s been hanging with all Summer will be returning to their dairy farm soon, too. There’s plenty of grass all around the barn and some of the house yard for him to still graze. He’s grown a LOT - but should be about #1500-#1800 when he goes to ‘The Spa’ come March.
