Caleb Williams Reportedly Wants Partial Ownership Of Whatever NFL Team Drafts Him

The Caleb Williams saga is going to be one that we're going to get tired of quickly. It's a unique situation. As long as Williams stays healthy and doesn't completely shit the bed, he will go number one in next year's draft. He's already got a Heisman Trophy, and now it seems like he's making demands.

About a month back, it was reported that Williams would consider staying in college if the Cardinals ended up with the number one overall pick. I think that's such an insane thing to entertain. It was like the first week of the season, why would you just randomly throw the Arizona Cardinals out there as a member of your shit list. But now it seems like he wants part ownership of a team.

Caleb Williams is a bold man. He played a terrible game last week against Notre Dame, but he is the most hyped quarterback prospect we've seen since Andrew Luck. I think he knows that he holds all the cards here, but will any teams be willing to pony up and actually give him equity? Aaron Rodgers is a multi-time MVP award winner with a Super Bowl in his back pocket, and the Jets still said no.

Crazy request but not a bad idea- you want a guy to have a skin in the game and what better way to make sure it works then give him part ownership of the team. That said it would never happen as you can’t count ownership of the team against the salary cap.

Remember- Steven Ross tries to do this with Tom Brady when the QB was in his last throws- give him minority ownership of the Dolphins. When the offer was revealed the Dolphins got into a ton of trouble.

Will never happen- the benefit could not be calculated against the salary cap.

Bob Kraft didn’t give Tom Brady a slice. I really doubt this guy is going to make a better case.

Why would a high draft pick like him want an ownership stake in a team who by definition is one of the worst in the league? Because even bad teams make money and continue to do so through the years. But it sets a dangerous precedent. How would the NFL deal with a QB released at some point by his first team with an ownership share that wants to play for a competitor? Force the player to sell his share to avoid conflict of interest?

This is all a moot point as players cannot have an ownership stake as per NFL rules.

Can an NFL Player Own a Team? Read This First!

Since it happens in other major sports leagues, fans of the National Football League may wonder whether or not an NFL player could own a team in the league.

No, NFL players cannot own a team because the league’s constitution forbids owners from playing on the field.

So, an NFL player having interest in becoming an owner or co-owner would first have to retire.

I doubt the NFL would approve of that. Seems to create an apparent conflict of interest if he goes somewhere else. I suppose it could be required for him to sell his shares before he leaves. Probably a moot point anyway because I doubt any team will give him ownership shares.

He'll go undrafted and end up working at McDonald's before any NFL owner is going to cut off a slice of his own pie to give it to a player ... any plater ... and certainly not a rookie.

When I see power plays like this I think 'He knows his stock is higher than it should be, he wants to grab the bag while he can before everyone else realizes it too.'

Caleb may be drafted high, #1 perhaps, but from what I've seen of him, I'd steer clear if I were an NFL GM.

USC hasn't exactly been a QB factory when it comes to NFL excellence. He's only 6'1" which, while not a disqualifier, isn't optimal. And in the games he's played well in, he usually is throwing from a pocket the size of an olympic pool. ND exposed him (and I HATE the Fighting Irish).

Da Bears, who likely will have the top 2 picks, should trade the top pick and get a draft haul from some desperate team willing to roll the dice.

I wonder if there is some loophole. There are rumors from sports sites that Aaron Rodgers had asked for same.

The four best things that have happened to Oklahoma Football were:
1. Lincoln Riley leaving to join USC.
2. Lincoln Riley taking this entitled QB with him.
3. Williams taking his egotistical old man with him.
4. Hiring Venables as Riley’s replacement.

Caleb Williams is nothing more than a talented Kaepernick.
I’m almost certain OU ‘gently encouraged’ Riley to leave.

The Bronco’s offered to restructure John Elway’s contract with ownership shares toward the end of his career. He chose not to and settled for cash. It ended up costing him close to $200 Million after the sale last year, if he had taken the deal.

So either Caleb Williams thinks the NFL will revote just for him (delusional) or his sports agent/management have been promising him something that they know they can’t deliver just to get him on board

There is a huge range in team valuations, potential growth, potential loss, annual dividend, and investor demand.

Cincinnati Bengals - $3.5 billion

Dallas Cowboys - $9.0 billion

Caleb Williams will get around $41 million guaranteed as Pick #1. The contract is for 4 years, with an optional fifth year - and salary limit - for the fifth year.

At any time, he can get fired for personal misconduct, lack of effort, not playing with pain, etc.

Williams is thinking that ticket sales and TV viewership will go up for the team that drafts him, therefore, the value of the team will go up.

That is a huge MAYBE!

The best investment - put a big chunk of your pay check each week into SPY (S&P 500) and QQQ (Nasdaq 100).

Advantage #1 - highly liquid - you can buy and sell in seconds from your home computer.

Advantage #2 - there is always risk, but the USA stock market, over any given 10 year period, almost always has above average returns compared to everything else.

I don’t think so. And if he’s part owner of one team, can he play for another?! Unprecedented…. And he hasn’t played a single snap.
