More patients go home instead of to long-term-care when sedation for common procedures is conducted by anesthesiologist (More skilled = fewer concerns)
Medical Xpress / Am Soc of Anesthesiologists / ^ | Oct. 14, 2023 | Vilma Joseph, M.D., MPH, FASA et al

Patients who had common procedures performed outside of the operating room (OR) were more likely to go home instead of to a long-term care facility when they were discharged from the hospital if their sedation was administered or directed by an anesthesiologist, rather than by a physician who is not a trained anesthesiologist, according to a study.

Patients who need catheters placed in a vein, angiograms (X-ray of the blood vessels), image-guided biopsies and many other procedures typically are treated in the interventional radiology (IR) suite instead of the OR and given sedation.

In the study, 9,682 patients had sedation in the IR suite and 1,639 (16.93%) were discharged from the hospital to a long-term care facility (such as a nursing home) because of complications that they may be more likely to experience due to their disease. Anesthesiologists have the training to identify these complications early and address them.

Of those who were not discharged home, 1,429 (87%) had their sedation administered or directed by a physician who was not an anesthesiologist, often with the assistance of a nurse, and 210 (13%) had their sedation administered or directed by an anesthesiologist.

"The anesthesiologist is not just providing sedation, but life support for the patient during the procedure," said Dr. Eikermann. "The difference in outcomes is because anesthesiologists are trained to identify early complications and treat them immediately. Physicians who are not anesthesiologists are not trained to do that."

Anesthesiologists administered or directed sedation for higher-risk patients, such as those with more health issues or who had more invasive procedures. Despite being at higher risk, the patients who received sedation administered or directed by an anesthesiologist were nearly 70% more likely to be discharged home than those whose sedation was administered or directed by a physician who was not an anesthesiologist.

Anesthesiologists can better make sure you go home safely after your procedure.

No doctor here is a serial killer.

Get your mind right.

That’s a very interesting and possibly concerning observation, although your headline seems to say the opposite of your topic sentence . (More skilled = fewer concerns) sort of threw me off. But what you’re saying is that the anesthesiologist specialists tend to over medicate. Correct?

ive been sedated so many times im not sure which is more- my unsedated time or my sedated time- I’ve never been sedated without an anesthesiologist however- They always come in before they sedate and explain everything they are gonna do- which goes right over my head- but is nice of them- I always try to see how long i can resist the sedation when they tell you to ‘count down from 100’ but i never make it past about 96 or so lol-

The only time I had trouble with anesthesia is when it was administered by someone other that an anesthesiologist.

No, which is why I put that clarifying item in.

They medicate properly and have fewer issues that ever require sending you to a long-term care facility.

That is, unless you believe having to go to such a place is preferable.

Most of us appreciate having the expertise of a doctor on this forum.

My experiences are similar. Wether it’s “twilight” sleep or full-blown general,
I’ve had men and women anesthesiologists, and they all would come in, do a brief exam, explain what they were going to do, and ask me if I had questions.
There were a couple times when I was administered an anesthetic for a colonoscopy, that I was waiting for it to take effect, and slowly realized that I was coming out of it, and they had already done the procedure.

The good ones are real artists at what they do.

It appears that nurses are allowed to do sedation for things like endoscopy. I had the TIVA protocol used on me for a major surgery. The head Dr did the gassing and moved me to first of day due to risk factors. I made the decision then no nurse was ever going to put me out for anything.

He told me he would let me view the cap they put on the machine for safety purposes before I went under which was BS because I was out in seconds from the spinal block. He was just trying to make me feel better.

I always thought only an anesthesiologist could do this. This freaks me out!

Ever since the lockdown, doctors et al have been out of control, scarfing up money and revelling in their inner nazi.

Since Joan rivers was mentioned I looked up what happened to her. Her procedure didn’t require a gas dr but she did have one. Even if you are getting the Michael Jackson drug it still comes with risks.

Joan had a spasm. Gas doctors are supposed to know how to deal with it but does take some skill.

Reading what happened to her has prompted me to dig up all the meds used on me to see if anything happened. At that time we didn’t know I have genetic problems processing drugs. To this day I don’t understand the big deal about OXY. It does nothing for me

Hmmm…..???
I am pretty sure Michael Jackson’s personal physician was an anesthesiologist.
So maybe MJ was an outlier. (Sorry if that seems redundant.)

I get your drift (regardless of the comment posted right after yours).
Sometimes inside jokes are more sad than funny.
Yours is a toss-up. Well played.
