Israel Has Ten Arab Members of Knesset
10/11

Posted on 10/11/2023 11:26:47 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Sorry for a vanity, but I can't find any articles with this information.

Israel currently has ten Arab members of Knesset. (Their parliament) And I think they've had this many for a while. Most are Muslim, one is Druze, one is Christian, and some are indeterminate. Two of them are women.

Muslim:

Mansour Abbas

Youssef Atauna [This one has two wives, which is against the law in Israel, but I guess he gets away with it.]

Iman Khatib-Yasin (Woman)

Ayman Odeh (Raised Musim, but secular)

Ahmad Tibi

Walid Taha

Druze:

Hamad Amar

Christian:

Aida Touma-Suleiman (Woman)

I couldn't find the religion of the following:

Yasser Hujirat

Walid al-Huashla

Can anyone tell me how many Jewish members there are of the Iran and Saudi Arabia governments?

How about Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, etc.?

So, you think Israel should be more like Iran and Saudi Arabia?

NO! Israel has been attacked by the muslims, trying to wipe them out, for over 1,400 years. Israel seems to only ask to be left alone. Europe has been attacked by hordes of muslims for the same time period. And Europe fought them off (until now). Fighting back is not the same as starting the attack. That is the difference...the concept of self defense.

” Israel has been attacked by the muslims, trying to wipe them out, for over 1,400 years.”

Christians have also attacked Jews over that same time period.

It’s not a specific law, it’s something understood by the majority parties. The Governance Law of 2015 raised the electoral threshold to 3.25%. The purpose was to restrict Arab membership which was around that time 17 members. It essentially forced Arab parties to disband and run on an Arab joint ticket. Also most parties will not put Arabs on their list. The Communist party is one exception.

Right now I think there are a lot of Muslims in Gaza that wish they were in Israel.

>> Christian: Aida Touma-Suleiman (Woman) <<

I just googled her. Looks like she's "Christian" the same way Bernie Sanders is "Jewish". She grew up in a Christian household, so her background is culturally Christian. Today, she's openly atheist.

Interesting. I'm surprised the Ayatollah even allows him to run, let alone get elected.

Interesting. Where did you get that bit of info, I searched and couldn't find anything. Is she related to the former PM? He wasn't Jewish.

Ah ha! I figured it out:

Under the 1906 constitution, Iran is REQUIRED to provided 5 seats in parliament for “religious minorities” in the country. This amounts to 2 seats for Armenian Christians (one for northern Iran and one for southern Iran), 1 seat for Assyrians, 1 for Jews, and 1 for Zoroastrians.

Surprisingly, this provision was retained after 1979 Iranian Revolution. (Maybe it would be have difficult and time consuming to abolish it?)

In any case, the lone Jew in the Iranian parliament is Homayoun Sameh (elected? appointed?) in 2020.

Most of these “religious minority” members appear to be token appointments who tow the regime line. The previous Jewish member of the Iranian Parliment, Siyamak More Sedgh, is on record saying that Israel is a corrupt “Zionist regime” that he personally dislikes. (However, another previous Jewish member of the Iranian parliament DID criticize the President of Iran for denying the holocaust)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Parliament_religious_minority_reserved_seats

Saudi Arabia does indeed have zero Jews in their parliament, HOWEVER, they also have ZERO MEMBERS of Parliament, period. There is NO legislative branch there — all decisions are made by the Saudi Royal Family.

In short, its untrue to say that other Middle Eastern countries have “zero” Jews in government. However, it’s probably accurate to say they have zero Jews in a position of actual power.

I think its also accurate to say the Israeli Knesset frequently has ZERO Christian members (sometimes 1 or 2 at most), and (currently) the lone Christian is only “Christian” on paper. However, given that Christians are only 2% of the population, I’d say this is more due to the Christians in Israel being inept at actually getting elected, or working together in any meaningful way to influence government.

I believe that the largest block of Arabs living under democracy are Israeli citizens.

They got an entire new constitution in 1979. They probably kept the provision as window dressing.
